The work opens with a discussion of the general characteristics and techniques of Chinese painting before exploring its development chronologically through the major dynasties, the Tang and Song to the Yuan, Ming and Qing periods. Joseph Hackin (1886-1941) was a French archaeologist, philologist and curator at the Musee Guimet, later serving as director of the French Archaeological Delegation in Afghanistan. Emile Guimet (1836-1918), who contributes the preface, was the French industrialist, traveller and collector who founded the museum. An important catalogue documenting the Musee Guimet"s collection.
