Fils de Marc Colombat de l'Isère (1797-1851), le spécialiste des vices de la voix et des troubles de la parole, l'inventeur du terme orthophonie et créateur de l'Institut orthophonique en 1830, Émile Colombat de l'Isère (1839-1891) reprit le flambeau paternel et publia ce Traité d'Orthophonie en 1880, somme de ses recherches et exposé de sa méthode. Dans cet ouvrage sous-titré "Voix normale, bégaiement, vices de parole, sons esthétiques, physiognomonie", Colombat, reprenant l'idée de Voisin, défend que le bégaiement ne résulte pas d'une malformation des organes vocaux. Cet ouvrage permet d'établir une sorte de psychologie du bègue en considérant le cas particulier des rapports du physique et du moral et l'influence de la volonté sur l'organisme.
