First edition of Rödiger's thesis that earned its author the right to lecture in theology as well as a professorship of oriental languages at the University of Halle. Rödiger (1801-74) denied that the Arabic version of the Old Testament's historical books was derived from the Alexandrian translation: instead, he proved that the Arabic translation of the Book of Judges, Ruth, and the Books of Samuel as well as of several parts of the Books of Kings and of Nehemiah as published in the Paris and London Polyglots was based on the Syriac Bible and constituted the work of several Christian writers of the 13th and 14th centuries. Other parts of the Books of Kings and of Nehemiah, he showed, were translated into Arabic by an 11-century Jewish author directly from the Hebrew text. - Some browning and foxing throughout. Priv. Halbleinenband. XXII, 52 Seiten. Emil Roediger (1801-1874) war ein deutscher Orientalist und Semitist, der in Halle und Berlin lehrte. Nach dem Tod von Wilhelm Gesenius, an den sich die vorliegende Schrift wendet, finalisierte er dessen Thesaurus Linguae Hebraicae fertig und publizierte weiteren Auflage von dessen Hebräischer Grammatik. Zum 25. Jubiläum der Deutschen Morgenländischen Gesellschaft, dessen Ko-Geschäftsführerer Rödiger war, erhielt er 1870 eine Medaille. Das vorliegende Exemplar enthält eine Widmung und Kurzbemerkung Rödigers, offenbar an Dr. (Aloys) Sprenger. Es stammte urspünglich aus der Jews' College Library, London. // Exemplar mit etwas stärkeren Gebrauchsspuren: Der Einband ist stärker berieben und die Ecken und Kanten sind bestoßen, der Schmutztitel hat sich oben für etwa 5cm aus der Bindung gelöst, ebendort ist die Bindung sehr leicht angebrochen; zwei Lagen (Titelei - S. XIV; S.43-52) haben sich oben zur Hälfte aus der Bindung gelöst. Das Papier ist altersbedingt gebräunt, aber in gutem Zustand. Die Innendeckel vorne und hinten sind mit einem Exlibris und Notizen in dunkler Tinte und Bleistift versehen, die Titelei mit Stempeln, aber der Buchblock selbst ist textsauber. Emil Roediger (1801-1874) was a German Orientalist and Semitist who taught in Halle and Berlin. After the death of Wilhelm Gesenius, to whom this text is addressed, he completed his Thesaurus Linguae Hebraicae and published further editions of his Hebrew Grammar. In 1870, he received a medal for the 25th anniversary of the German Oriental Society, of which Rödiger was co-director. The present copy contains a dedication and brief remark from Rödiger, apparently to Dr. (Aloys) Sprenger. It originally came from the Jews' College Library, London. // Copy with somewhat heavier signs of use: the cover is more heavily rubbed and the corners and edges are bumped, the half-title has come loose from the binding at the top for about 5cm, and the binding is very slightly broken there; Two layers (title page - p. XIV; p. 43-52) have come halfway out of the binding at the top. The paper is browned due to age, but in good condition. The inside covers at the front and back have an ex libris and notes in dark ink and pencil, the title page has stamps, but the text of the book block itself is clean.
