This was likely the first time that many climate scientists had thought much about the humanities as relevant to what they were studying. This book sets out to rectify that, documenting what a broad selection of academics, journalists, artists, and others working in the humanities and social sciences have been writing about climate change recently. It consists of over 200 summaries of such works and provides a good introduction to the range of thinking about climate change addressed by non-scientists, and a good entry point to a growing literature.

On the other hand, climate change is caused by human behavior, driven by economic considerations and the universal human desire for a better life, and ultimately affects all aspects of human endeavor including the 'imaginative practices from the arts and humanities [that] play a critical role in thinking through our representations of environmental change' (Yusoff and Gabrys, 2011). Mike Hulme, writing in Nature Climate Change, one of the premier scientific journals dealing with climate change, in a 2011 opinion piece titled Meet the Humanities, asserted that 'Although climate is inarguably changing society, social practices are also impacting on the climate. Nature and culture are deeply entangled, and researchers must examine how each is shaping the other. But they are largely failing to do so' (Hulme, 2011). This was likely the first time that many climate scientists thought much about the humanities as relevant to what they were studying. That was true in my case, and stimulated me to propose a course at Claremont McKenna College entitled 'The Human Response to Climate Change'. My working definition of suitable material was any serious writing or research about climate change produced by non-scientists, and by that I meant people who were not some version of physicists, chemists, biologists, geologists, or engineers. In other words, I include the humanities and social sciences, but mostly none of the natural sciences. This book consists of summaries of texts published in 2016 and 2017 which meet these criteria. They are easy to read, interesting, and give a good sense of what non-scientific academics and journalists are currently writing about climate change.

Neuware - Most of us know that anthropogenic climate change is melting the ice caps, increasing sea levels, exacerbating the strength and damaging power of the largest hurricanes and cyclones, and damaging coral reefs. This is just the beginning. There are many current and projected impacts on human health and food security, and all manner of ecological changes-mostly for the worse. But there is also hope in the rapid development of the latest inexpensive solar panel technology and battery storage capacity that will obviate the need to burn fossil fuels, the source of all this climatological mayhem. Most of us don't get to read the latest scientific papers on the subject though; to see them requires subscriptions to expensive scientific journals or a university library card. This book comprises easily readable summaries of over 150 of such papers published in 2016 and 2017, well before the results appear in most popular books. The 19 authors searched the current literature and cover a broad swath of the most interesting climate-related research from the past year-and-a-half. It remains to be seen whether the US public will follow the conservative agenda rejecting this science and concluding that the proper way forward is to equate 'America First' with the resumption of the wholesale use of coal and oil along with a reduction of the energy-efficiency and pollution-prevention measures that industry now knows how to produce in a cost effective way. Let's hope not.
