Compris…ed of a Greek language homage of photography by Andreas Embirikos, an extensive 324-page album with 240 photographs of Andros, Greece, by Andreas Embirikos and an anthology of his writings on Andros. The introductory texts are by Yiannis Stathatos (curator of the exhibition), D.I. Polemis, historian of Andros and director of the Kaireion Library, and Leonidas Embirikos, son of the poet. He writes interpretative text about his father. The entirety is in Greek language. The photographic material includes a section of photographs from 1920, where the 19-year-old Embirikos follows his father to Andros on an election campaign and writes eloquent verses in the margins of the photographs, and then photographs taken from 1952 to 1971: landscapes, buildings, animals, bathers, portraits of common people, bourgeois, children, artist friends of the poet (Elytis, Marina Karagatsi, G. Mavroidis, Aris Konstantinidis) and scenes from Embirikos' private life with his wife Vivika and his son Leonidas. Andros is recorded as a poetic place in the 1950s and 1960s by a great writer who elevated the sideline of photography to a systematic high occupation. With this publication we have a return to Embirikos' birthplace, a pivotal point in his life and work (all from the publisher's web-site, translated from the original Greek). Unpaginated, but roughly 140 pp.Member, I.O.B.A., C.B.A., and adherent to the highest ethical standards. Additional postage may be required for oversize or especially heavy volumes, and for sets.

Andreas Embirikos wuchs in Rumänien und Griechenland auf. 1926/27 zog er nach Paris, wo er eine Psychoanalyse bei René Laforgue begann und sich entschied, selbst Psychoanalytiker zu werden. Er las surrealistische Zeit…schriften (La Révolution Surréaliste, Surréalisme au Service de la Révolution und Minotaure) und beteiligte sich an surrealistischen Enquêtes. 1933 lernte er André Breton kennen und trat dem Pariser Surrealisten-Kreis bei. Die Gedichtsammlung »Hochofen« erschien im März 1935 und belegt eine Nähe zur kommunistischen Idee. Im gleichen Jahr eröffnete Embirikos seine psychoanalytische Praxis in Athen und hielt ebenfalls in Athen den Vortrag »Über den Surrealismus«. Nach dem zweiten Weltkrieg erweiterte Embirikos allmählich sein rein surrealistisches Programm. So blieb Hochofen neben den Werken des bekanntesten Vertreters Nikos Engonopoulos eines der wenigen Zeugnisse des Surrealismus in Griechenland. Der Versuch Embirikos' nach 1946, die Freud'sche Psychoanalyse in Griechenland einzuführen, scheiterte. In den Jahren bis zu seinem Tod 1975 blieb er aber Mitglied der Pariser psychoanalytischen Gesellschaft, praktizierte jedoch nicht mehr und widmete sich ausschließlich seinem literarischen Werk und der Fotografie. Die Illustration des Einbandes dieser Sammlung (rechts) verwendet eine seiner Aufnahmen.

The first purely surrealist Greek text… by Greece's first psychoanalyst. One of 50 copies, inscribed by the author in Greek on the title page: '"We are all within our future." (p. 70) / To Katerina N. Koumandarou / With great esteem and / infinite friendship. / A. [L.] Embirikos'. Together with George Seferis, Embirikos was the most important representative of the Generation of the '30s, contributing greatly to the introduction of modernism in Greek letters. With Ypsikaminos, his first poetry collection, Embirikos introduced an innovative way of writing poetry in Greece. He used the method of automatic writing, which had already been used by the surrealists of Paris, as well as the unconscious mind, which he had learned from his studies in psychoanalysis. '"Blast-Furnace" holds a unique place in modern Greek poetry. No poet prior to "Blast-Furnace" - in spite of indications that surrealism was known in Greece before 1935 - and no poet since, has put together a book so heretical, so cryptic and so "difficult" - one which nevertheless sold out in no time, "not because it was of interest, but because it was considered so scandalous, written by someone deranged," as the poet himself reminisces.' (Yatromanolakis, 2001) NB: Modern Greek polytonic orthography transliterated according to the Library of Congress standard.
