Engraved frontispiece, showing Jupiter seated on a pedestal, opening an egg to release all creation.Renowned physician and scientist William Harvey is best known for his accurate description of how blood circulates through the body. While his published work on the circulation of blood is considered the most important of his academic life, Harvey also made significant contributions to embryology with the publication of his book Exercitationes de Generatione Animalium in 1651. In this book he established several theories that would set the stage for modern embryology and addressed many embryological issues including conception, embryogenesis, and spontaneous generation. In this famous collection of observations on embryology and generation, Harvey formulates "the first fundamentally new theory of generation since antiquity" by "shifting the focus to the egg itself as the primary generative agent." The fruit of a lifetime of experience, the treatise contradicts traditional Aristotelian views on generation by asserting that all life develops epigenetically, either literally in an egg or according to the analogy of the egg. This principle has had great importance in the history of embryology and led to the search for the mammalian ovum.OOCLC Number / Unique Identifier:560965412.Keynes no. 35.

First word of the title and the name of the recipient on colophon leaf printed in blue letters. Original publisher s half morocco binding with author s name and title in gilt lettering on spine; lightly worn. This dramatization of an interlude in Goethe's Italian journey is the first book privately printed for the noted Berlin bibliophile Gotthard Laske (1882-1936), a wealthy outfitter, who acted as a generous patron to authors, and commissioned a number of publications. Unique edition, beautifully printed in the New Elzevir type on hand-made paper, limited to 100 copies only: the present copy, number 10, was printed for Lilli Wolff, a member of a Berlin music publishing family. The subject of the play, written in 1919 by the wellknown German writer Albrecht Schaeffer (1855-1950), is Goethe s visit to his friend Heinrich Meyer at Stäfa on the Lake of Zürich in 1797 as part of his celebrated Italian journey. The action is set at the Alte Krone Inn, the main characters being Goethe, Meyer, and a young lady also lodging at the inn. Plate 36 from Bilder-Hefte zur Geschichte des Bücherhandels und der mit demselben verwandten Künste und Gewerbe by Heinrich Lempertz. Jean, son of Abraham, born in 1622, had since 1647 been in partnership with his father and uncle at Leiden, and when they died Daniel, son of Bonaventure, born in 1626, joined him. Their partnership did not last more than two years, and after its dissolution Jean carried on the business alone until his death in 1661. In 1654 Daniel joined his cousin Louis (the third of that name and son of the second Louis), who was born in 1604, and had established a printing press at Amsterdam in 1638.From 1655 to 1666 they published a series of Latin classics in 8vo, cum notis variorum; Cicero in 4to; the Etymologicon linguae Latinae; and in 1663 a magnificent Corpus Juris Civilis in folio in two volumes. Louis died in 1670, and Daniel in 1680. Besides Bonaventure, another son of Matthieu, Isaac, born in 1593, established a printing press at Leiden, where he carried on business to 1625; but none of his editions attained much fame. The last representatives of the Elzevir printers were Peter, grandson of Joost, who from 1667 to 1675 was a bookseller at Utrecht, and printed seven or eight volumes of little consequence; and Abraham, son of the first Abraham, who from 1681 to 1712 was university printer at Leiden.

Zustand: Very Good. Amstelodami [Amsterdam]: Apud Ludovicum Elzevirium, 1650. Tertia editio prioribus auctior & emendatior. Quarto (20cm); 18th-century maroon morocco over marbled paper-covered boards, elaborate gilt spine in six compartments, marbled endpapers; [12],168,191pp. (collated complete, but please see note); woodcut publisher's Minerva emblem on title page, woodcut initials throughout. Some scuffing to extremities with brief exposure at corners, else a Very Good, internally fresh and sound example. The second volume issued with the title page "Appendix, Continens Obiectiones Quintas & Septimas in Renati Des-Cartes Meditationes," Amstelodami: Apud Ludovicum Elzevirium, 1649. The third edition of Descarte's Meditations on First Philosophy, published shortly after his death in February, 1650. The contents include his six Meditations as well as the seven objections from the author's contemporaries, each followed by his response. This copy is a bibliographical peculiarity, the pagination and collation differing from all the other copies described in OCLC, Willems, and Library Hub. The standard pagination for all other copies of this third edition (and the four subsequent Elzevier editions that followed) is: [12],191,164, usually followed by the 88pp. Epistola, with a collational formula: *4 **2 A-Z4 Aa4 a-v4 x2 aa-ll4. This copy is issued without the Epistola and the pagination and collation are otherwise nearly identical, but in a different order: *4 2*2 A-X4 a-v4 x2 Y-2A4. According to the bibliographical listing of the copy at St. Andrew's, "The Elzevirs printed Descartes' philosophical works in quarto format six times between 1644 and 1677, and the parts of each ed. were sold together and separately, in many different combinations." However, this does not explain away the inconsistencies in the pagination or why there are no other examples that conform to this collation. A curious example, worthy of further research. See Willems 1107, describing this as the first edition in quarto format.

Frontispiece portrait and engraved title in "De Rhetorica," woodcut printer's devices on titles of other volumes, woodcut headpieces, tailpieces, and decorative initials. Engraved title with contemporary ink signature of "Arn. Willems 535; Rahir 530; Schweiger II, 106; Dibdin I, 400; Brunet II, 8; Graesse II, 157. A couple of rust spots in one volume, occasional mild foxing or faint corner creases, other insignificant defects, but very close to fine internally. Spines a bit sunned and slightly rubbed, minor wear to joints, boards with trivial chafing and soiling, but none of these problems of significance, and the delightful set very well preserved and making an especially pleasing appearance on the shelf. This is a particularly pleasing set of what Dibdin deems "a very beautiful and correct edition" of Cicero. Dibdin states further that "bibliographers . . . dwell with rapture on the beauty of the paper and brilliancy of the type; and critics allow that its correctness is equal to its beauty." It is one of the highlights of that golden period (1622-52) when the chief glories of the vast Elzevir corpus of works was produced in Leyden by Louis Elzevir's son, Bonaventure, in partnership with a grandson, Abraham. Britannica says that this partnership's "small editions in 12mo, 16mo, and 24mo, for elegance of design, neatness, clearness and regularity of type, and beauty of paper, cannot be surpassed." The bibliographers are unanimous in their praise of this sought-after "Works" of Cicero. And these 10 exceptionally pretty volumes would enhance a small space on any library shelf.

Very good. Original fold lines. Exhibits faint offsetting. Size 4.75 x 5 Inches. This is a finely-engraved miniature map of Italy, with Sicily, Sardinia and Corsica, printed in a 1661 Elzevir edition of Philipp Clüver's Introductionis in Universam Geographiam . The map shows place names drawn from of antiquity, derived from classical sources, including Pliny, Strabo, and Julius Caesar. It therefore depicts the Italy known to Ancient Rome. Mountains are indicated pictorially. A Mystery Engraver? A Woman? None of the maps appearing in the Elzevir edition of Clüver's Introductionis in Universam Geographiam are signed by an engraver. For a miniature map, this is not unusual - very often this work was executed by journeyman engravers, who would not have the right to apply their imprint to the work. However, it is very possible that the matriarch of the Elzevir firm - Eva van Alphen - did this work herself. She is known to have been an accomplished engraver, having been credited with a beautiful Dutch Bible map after Visscher ( Orbis Terrarum Tabula Recens Emendata et in Lucem Edita per N. Visscher ). At the time that their edition of Clüver was produced, Eva's husband Jean was in failing health and upon his 1661 death she took over the direction of the firm. The excellent work here may well be hers. Publication History and Census The map was engraved for inclusion in Philipp Clüver's Introductionis in Universam Geographiam . Though he did not live to see it in print, Cluver's text would be one of the most popular of the seventeenth century, which was printed in many editions starting in 1624 but continuing well into the 18th century. This example appeared in a 1661 edition of the book, published by the house of Elzevir. Signed by Author(s).
