FROM THE FOREWORD: Early in the fall of 1959, George B. Dowell, Executive Director of the Centennial, suggested a Vassar chronology as an appropriate projec…t for the College's one hundredth year. The Central Committee for the Centennial approved, and two trial editions were circulated in mimeographed form to the faculty and administration and to many alumnae and friends of the College. It was decided, however, that for general publication, a different approach was desirable, and the manuscript was turned over to Constance Dimock Ellis, '38, for editing. Mrs. Ellis has skillfully selected highlights of Vassar for history and by the use of extensive quotations and additions to has given life and sparkle to the chronicle. The title chosen for the chronology, The Magnificent Enterprise, is an appropriate image for the college's centennial. The Founder's letters and diaries are full of references to "the enterprise." Mr. Vassar sometimes characterized it as the educational enterprise, the humble, the noble, the benevolent, the great and finally the magnificent enterprise. His phrase is being used not only for the title of this work but for other centennial that projects such as the traveling photographic exhibition.

In this work the author explores the pre-historic and historic influences on two Cypriot forests in order to compile a definitive record of the evolutionary ecology of the forest environments in response to human impact and utilisation since antiquity. The scope included the f…ollowing: An extensive field survey of the afforested landscape to record species types and specific site ecology and to assess the impact of historic settlement patterns within the forest; To correlate changing forest patterns discerned from the palaeobotanic record with known human associations; To define species habitat in relation to ore bearing geological material and archaeological sites; To ascertain the current level of biodiversity; To propose a base-line for the rehabilitation of the forest environment. The information provided has been collated from observations recorded during a systematic survey of the Makheras and Adelphi Forests, Cyprus, over a period of seventeen months. An important aspect of the data recorded was a number of ancient archaeological sites, previously not thought to exist in the forest areas.
