FIRST EDITION in French circa 1830, inscribed 1834, the first story is dated 1829 on its separate title page, the other 3 undated. Approximately 143 x 90 mm, 5¾ x 3½ inches, original black roan spine, marbled boards, gilt title to spine in double ruled gilt frame, pages: (4), 36, 36, 36, 36. Double sided advert leaf for Elliott's works bound after general title page. Each of the 4 stories has a title page, a delightful folding copper plate frontispiece, image size 118 x 160 (4½" x 6¼"), plus 2 engraved plates. Spine and corners slightly worn, a little marbled paper chipped off along board edges, rear endpaper removed, occasional very neat ink correction to error in French text, very little pencil scribble erased from a couple of margins, early inscriptions on endpapers, tiny chip to lower margin of 1 folding plate. Lepee. 12mo, 145 x 90 mm, 5¾ x 3½ inches, pages: [4], 36, 36, 36, 36, publisher's adverts on pages [3]-[4], original red roan backed marbled boards, gilt title to spine, each tale with a title page in French, a very attractive 3 panel folding copper engraved frontispiece (175 x 145 mm, 5¾ x 7 inches), and 2 plates. Only the first tale is dated: 1829. Spine slightly faded, tiny chip to tail of spine, corners slightly worn, armorial bookplate on front pastedown, faint offsetting on title pages, fore-edge of frontispieces to Tales 2 and 3 slightly browned, not affecting image, No. 2 has a vertical misfold, a few light fox spots to 1 margin, otherwise contents very nice.
