A novel set among the greying ruins of the columned temples of Paestum, an other of the author's series touching significant moments in history when mankind has faced the dissolution of an epoch. The daughter of the wealthiest man in England at the turn of the 20th century, Ellerman adopted the pen name "Bryher" when she entered the famed 1902s literary world of Paris whose epicenter was Sylvia Beach's Shakespeare & Co. bookshop. She was a friend of Hemingway, James Joyce, Gertrude Stein, Hilda Doolittlew and others of that period; openly lesbian in Paris, she entered into a marriage of convenience with Robert McAlmon in order to hide her sexuality from her family in England. They divorced after her father's death in 1927. She used her wealth to suppor many new or struggling authors, artists of the Dadaist and Surrealist movements, the "little magazines" of Montparnasse and beginning around 1930, became interested in filmmaking.

Bryher was the pen name of Annie Winifred Ellerman, a remarkable woman and daughter of the Ellerman ship-owning family who, during the 1920s in Paris, used her fortune to help to finance the careers of many struggling writers living in the city. Among those who benefitted from her help were James Joyce and Edith Sitwell. Along with her lover Hilda Doolitle and the author Kenneth Macpherson, she founded the magazine Close Up, and from her home in Switzerland she also helped over 100 jews evacuate from Nazi Germany during the first few years of the Second World War. Lowell's Preface, appearing for the first time here (added to the second English edition in the same year), concludes in adulatory terms: 'No better study of the growth of the artist's mind has been written, I think'. Bryher had published a 'Critical Appreciation of Amy Lowell' two years earlier. The book takes its epigraph from the author's partner, the poet H.D.; a semi-autobiographical narrative, continued by 'Two Selves' in 1923 (a work given the provisional title of 'Adventure' at the close here).
