Erstausgabe
Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Six photos including frontis of the author and her family, 6.25 x 4.25", blue cloth, gilt lettering, 96pp. Small ink(?) stain on front cover, spine tips and corners bumped and worn, textblock cracked, one photo detached and has chipped edges else good. Eliza Suggs, 1876-1908, was born to former slaves in Bureau County, Illinois, a stronghold of abolitionism and a key hub on the Underground Railroad. She writes about the enslavement and emancipation of her parents, her father's military service during the Civil War, their dedication to the Free Methodist Church where her father became pastor. Eliza, one of five girls (at the writing of the book) was born with osteogenesis imperfecta, a genetic disorder which causes bones to break easily. It may have affected her growth physically but not mentally. She went to school, won a medal for a temperance recitation, assisted her father, the Reverend James Suggs at his services, spoke and sang at temperance meetings. The book not only contains biographies of her parents but also her poems including "The Octoroon" and "The Drunkard's Wife". On her health she writes "Some wonder how I can be happy in my condition It is the sunlight of God in my soul that makes me happy. In fact many pleasures come to me through the five senses, of which I have full use. Then too, I have good use of my hands and can work and earn a living." Eliza Suggs may have been one of the first, if not the first disabled black woman to have her writing published. Extremely SCARCE FIRST EDITION.
