The volume Salvatore Fiume e i giochi della memoria is the first in a new editorial series, Sfogliando il Novecento, dedicated to the works of the Vatican Museums Collection of Contemporary Art. Scientific rigour and readability are the two distinctive elements of the series, which seeks to present to a wider public the research, often supplemented by previously unpublished documents, on the most important bodies of work by artists of the last century. After Salvatore Fiume the series will continue with Henri Matisse, Marino Marini, Marc Chagall, Emilio Greco, and Giacomo Manzù. Published to commemorate the centenary of his birth, this monograph, available exclusively in Italian, reconstructs and analyses the history of the rich body of paintings donated to the Vatican Museums by the Sicilian artist. A first group of works entered the Collection of Contemporary Art in 1973, the year of the inauguration and opening to the public of the new section of the Museums established at the behest of Paul VI; a larger number was acquired some years later, on the occasion of the exhibition celebrating Pope Montini's eightieth year. The introductory essay and the catalogue notes, by Elisabetta Masala, are enriched with historical photographs and unpublished drawings from the Salvatore Fiume Archive Foundation of Canzo, retracing his artistic career and reconstructing the history of each individual work. …
