Gutes Ex., Vortitel mit Widmung. - PRESENTAZIONE // Chiedo venia al lettore (così si usava dire un tempo), se, prima di entrare nel tema della presente pubblicazione di Elio Fox, discorro brevemente dell'attività svolta dal nostro giovane Autore in terreno diverso dalla storia. Intendo dire che h…o apprezzato l'opera di Elio Fox come scrittore di teatro e che ho trovato in lui il continuatore in senso stretto della nostra migliore tradizione teatrale. Da Vede storie di Dante Sartori a Storie d'ancoi di Elio Fox il legame è evidente: cioè intenzionale e cosciente. Fox si è pienamente reso conto di essere il continuatore di una letteratura nostrale nel campo del Teatro, e, con il titolo scelto per il suo intreccio, si è collegato direttamente all'opera fortunata e sempre al pubblico gradita, di Dante Sartori. Il tema, in fondo, è identico ed è eterno, perché è il tema dell'amore. Al di sopra del « gergo » che i due giovinotti hanno assunto dal loro ambiente e dal loro tempo, che cosa c'è di autentico e di vero? C'è un fatto antico come il mondo: cioè l'innamoramento dei due ragazzi. Ogni tempo ama alla sua maniera; ma l'Autore ha fatto perno sopra codesto fatto antico, e con ciò ha dimostrato di essere un autentico scrittore di teatro, capace di svolgere un piccolo fatto della cronaca d'oggi sullo sfondo di ciò che non è episodico, ma profondo e duraturo. L'amore non conosce variazioni e rimane sempre lo stesso, ma, naturalmente, ogni coppia di ragazzi ha l'impressione di essere la prima al mondo a conoscere questo sentimento: ed è inevitabile che sorga il dramma (che potrebbe incontrare anche particolari asprezze) della necessità di inserire la loro piccola (e per essi nuova) realtà esaltante, nel quadro sociale in cui si trovano immersi. Perciò l'amore di due giovani si colora diversamente in ogni epoca. Ma il nostro Autore ha capito benissimo che per dare una cornice di validità al « fatto nuovo » non servono gli slogan del momento, ma serve la conciliazione con il mondo e con l'amore di ieri. Oggi, Elio Fox, ha spostato ad altra materia e ad altra atmosfera il suo interessamento per l'antico, il suo legame con il passato: e co-desta materia si riferisce ad un altro aspetto eterno e inabolibile della vita dell'uomo: la necessità di cibarsi e di essere ospitato, al riparo dal freddo, dalla pioggia, dal sole cocente: o, semplicemente al riparo dalla fatica, che può assurgere, in assoluto, a « questa fatica della vita » come diceva Giacomo Leopardi. E, dal semplice primitivo bisogno di cibarsi, l'uomo è passato attraverso un graduale perfezionamento e affinamento, fino all'arte del preparare i cibi. Un antico assioma poneva la sostanziale differenza: « Una cosa è nutrirsi, e un'altra cosa è mangiare »: la prima è semplicemente funzione fisiologica che era valida anche per l'uomo primitivo; la seconda rappresenta una scelta, una cura, un'attenzione, un impegno di ordine qualitativo: e con ciò è entrata di diritto nel nòvero delle arti. L'importanza storica della cucina è un tema intorno al quale sarebbe inutile dilungarsi; e, intorno all'importanza che per parecchi secoli è stata attribuita al rapporto fra cucina e diplomazia, basterà ricordare la famosa battuta di Talleyrand, mentre stava partendo per rappresentare la Francia al Congresso di Vienna. Al re che non finiva di fargli raccomandazioni e di suggerirgli consigli, l'espertissimo Ministro degli Esteri rispondeva: « Che Vostra Maestà mi creda: ho bisogno più di pentole che di istruzioni ». La forza di persuasione di una tavola raffinata era equipollente e non solo nel periodo di Talleyrand alle buone argomentazioni diplomatiche. « Dimmi come mangi e ti dirò chi sei », aveva lasciato scritto il più grande teorico della fisiologia del gusto: Brillat-Savarm (Anthelme Brillat-Savarin [1755-1826], Physiologie du goùt, pubblicato nel 1825.
