Internally, [5], [1], 20 chromolithographed plates (coloured), all mounted on thick card, with guards, each accompanied by a leaf of descriptive text, yellow endpapers, a.e.g., some light spotting and offsetting, small hole to 2 tissue guards. A lovely example! (324*241 mm). (Anderson 338). Walton, landscape painter, illustrated 7 books by his friend TG Bonney, who was a geologist and active mountaineer. See ODNB.

Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. TG Bonney (Thomas George 1833-1923) (illustrator). First. In maroon cloth with gilt and black ink decorative tooling and title, edges and corners rubbed slightly. Spine has title in gilt, looks like its been repaired in the distant past. Internally, NO inscriptions etc, lightest of browning to first and last couple of page edges, 20 mounted chromolitho plates of atmospheric Welsh scenes, each with is paper guard, clean and very tight, each with its own leaf of descriptive text, text block edges in gilt. A wonderful copy of a title which is normally found loose with plates separated! One of the best copies we have had! (COPAC. WorldCat) Walton, landscape painter, also illustrated seven books by his friend T. G. Bonney, including The Peaks and Valleys of the Alps (1867), The Coast of Norway (1871), and Welsh Scenery (1875). See ODNB for a full Bio. Bonney, geologist, though said to be of indifferent health at times, was a very active alpine mountaineer and carried out numerous field investigations, even into old age. He died at his home, in Cambridge, unmarried, on 9 December 1923. His autobiography, Memories of a Long Life (1921), says little about Bonney's geological work, but records his impressive alpine achievements, gives fascinating insights into Cambridge life in the nineteenth century, and reveals the author as a tremendous trencherman with a seemingly inordinate interest in food. No Jacket. 1st Edition. hardback, folio, decorative brown cloth lettered black and gilt, all edges gilt, usual minor scuffing and rubbing to extremities, a later matching spine skilfully laid in & thus, unusually so for this work a tightly bound copy, twenty coloured chromolithographic plates by Elijah Walton mounted with interleaving paper guards, a descriptive text by T G Bonney, faded gift inscription to original owner on front free endpaper, stain to bottom margin of the fist plate, some marginal foxing to some plates, two repairs to paper guards, The plate of The Swallow Falls lacks paper guard and has creasing and a stain to leading top corner of margin (not affecting plate). The plates all remain bright and the colours fast. A pleasing copy.

Picken after Walton's drawings, and printed by M. & N. Hanbart. Corners rubbed and worn, a few small marks to boards. Front inner hinge beginning to split across end-papers. Some light foxing throughout. A few tissue guards creased and slightly torn. Text block shaken but holding. Enjoyable.

Gilt and black titles and decorations. 20 tipped-in paper guarded chromolithograph plates. Some wear to cloth mainly to corners, with a little fraying. Front and rear joints cracked. All plates present but with some foxing. 1 plates has paper-guard missing. Another plate appears to have been re-inserted, but in the wrong place. The paper guards have a fair amount of damage with some pieces missing. Packaged with care and promptly dispatched!

The ?Flowers.? is a most charming work with 12 full page chromolithographs, representing beautiful alpine flowers, with appropriate landscape backgrounds of peaks, rocks or glaciers. Pure shaped, delicate, and transparent in colour, with tints admirably blended by gradations almost as fine as wrought by hand.With commentary by the English geologist Thomas George Bonney (1833-1923), another great alpinist and naturalist at the time. Con un titolo litografico e 21 magnifiche e grandiose tavole a colori a piena pagina di J.H. Lowes, tratte dagli acquarelli di Walton,  ciascuna montata come sempre con una didascalia stampata e il testo descrittivo a seguire. Le luminose cromolitografie con colori pastello traducono perfettamente gli acquerelli a soggetto alpino, dipinte dall'artista inglese (1832-1880) con occhio sognante e quasi mistico per l'amata montagna, tra le vedute più significative quelle delle Alpi Occidentali, tra cui il Cervino, il Monte Bianco, il Monviso,  Val Tournanche, la Valle d'Aosta, la Dent Du Midi e la Grivola.  L'introduzione ed il testo di commento alle immagini sono del reverendo Bonney (1833-1923), studioso, geologo ed amico di Walton, studioso amico dell'artista nonché presidente dell'Alpine Club, insieme a William Mathews. Poco nota, seppur citata dal Perret, è questa tiratura, "reissue", dell'anno successivo alla prima (1867); entrambe sono rare. Elijah Walton's fine colour plate views of the Western Alps, including the Matterhorn, Mont Blanc, Monte Viso, Aosta Valley, Dent Du Midi, and The Grivola. The present edition is the reissue of the original subscribers' edition first published in 1867. In 1862 William Matthews, the founder of the Alpine Club, first commissioned the landscape artist Elijah Walton to travel to the Alps, and for the next five years he journeyed to various parts of the region to paint. The text for Peaks and Valleys is by the geologist T.G. Bonney who, having himself made nine visits to the Alps, testifies to the Ruskinian authenticity of Walton's views, praising them favourably to 'photographs of mountains [which] are rarely satisfactory, and generally make them appear lower and far less impressive than they really are.'
