paperback. Zustand: Very Good. Minor shelf wear, wear to edges, binding tight, pages clean and unmarked. Faith after the Holocaust By Eliezer Berkovits Professor Berkovits has written passionately about God and the Holo-caust, about good and evil, about faith in the face of darkest op-pression. He raises, of course, the well-known questions: What is our attitude toward God and his abstention from involvement in the tragedy of European Jewry? His noninterference in bloody acts of his-tory in the past? His hiddenness as man is confronted by poverty, war, and injustice? In his analysis of the problems and his approach to them, Professor Berkovits is most original. Placing the Holocaust into the context of the world history of the Jewish people, he brings to bear upon his sub-ject the classical tradition and wisdom of Judaism, thus leading his theme up to the Jewish people's return to Zion and Jerusalem. Is God present in victory and absent in defeat? Victory, as in the Six Day War, does not necessarily prove divine involvement any more than dread defeat, as in the crematoria, is proof of divine indifference. Where does man's responsibility end in history and where does God's begin? Professor Berkovits answers the exponents of the new theology and the God-is?dead proponents. Showing how man may affirm his faith even when confronted with God's awesome silence, the book is an urgent plea for survival, not only of the Jewish people but of the entire human race that in this holocaust world is threatened with the "Final Solution." About the Author DR. ELIEZER BERKOVITS is a leading philosopher?theologian and talmudic scholar. He studied with Rabbi Yehiel Weinberg at the Hildesheimer Rabbinical Seminary in Berlin and was for many years Professor of Philosophy at the Hebrew Theological College in Skokie, Illinois. He currently resides in Israel. He is the author of numerous major works in the fields of philosophy and Halakha including Major Themes in Modern Philosophies of Judaism, T'Nai Bi'N'suin u'V'Get, HaHalakha: Koha V'Tafkida, and Not in Heaven: The N' ture and Function of Halakha, winner of the 1983 Kenneth B. Smil Present Tense Literary Award in Jewish religious thought.
