The author presents a detailed analysis of military coups d'etat, commencing with a survey of their history from 1936 to February 1966 in Syria. The author analyzes patterns of military coups d'etat and, in particular, the nature of military dictatorship and points of similarity and difference between coups d'etat in the Arab world and other regions.
