The Finno-Norwegian photographer and journalist Käre Kivijärvi was born in Hammerfest, in northern Norway, in 1938. At various times in later life he was resident in Finland, Oslo and Cyprus, where he died in 1991. After a stint as a selftaught photojournalists, from 1958 to 1960 he studied under Professor Otto Steinert in Germany. Steinert was a leading representative of the subjective photography school then in vouge, a movement which provided Kivijärvi with some of his ideas. In the early 1960s he worked for various Norwegian and Finnish newspapers and magazines. His assignments took him all over the world, and the photographs he took - many of them accompanied by lively captions - admirably and uniquely combine documentary and aesthetic qualities: they exhibit a rare blend of human sensitivity and consummate craftmanship. This book features fifty-five of Kivijärvi's photographs, among them a number of hitherto unpublished colour pictures.
