First edition, second issue. A re-issue of the sheets of the original printing of 1701, with a cancel letterpress title-page; the engraved title-page, with its earlier date, has been retained. Samuel Wesley (1662-1735) was the son of a dissenting clergyman, but he decided as a young man to accept the established church, and was thus able to secure a place at Exeter College, Oxford, where he earned his BA in 1688; his ordination followed shortly afterwards. Wesley began writing verse as an undergraduate, and a collection of poems with the unfortunate title Maggots was published in 1685 by his brother-in-law, the bookseller John Dunton. His later literary efforts were on more conventional subjects. Wesley had a large family, and is now best remembered as the father of John and Charles Wesley, the founders of Methodism. This volume consists of 151 selections from the Gospels and Acts, with Wesley's version in heroic couplets on facing pages; a small engraving by John Sturt appears at the head of each group of verses from the Bible. At the front is a full-page emblematic engraving of 'Heav'nly Wisedom'. Wesley published a companion volume for the Old Testament in 1705, which was also re-issued in 1715. Foxon W326.

On both sides of the first leaf of a bifolium, with the reverse of the second leaf cut down by a third, and carrying a red wax seal and three postmarks, with the address by Gurney to Waddington in Rouen. After explaining that he has been away in Yorkshire, he expresses regret that 'our efforts respecting Edwd Cherry have so terminated - it is however clear that the maintenance of fhis wife and family is an overwhelming duty to him'. He has himself made payments in London, and understood that 'our Friends in Rouen were to pay for the room &c'. Nevertheless he is sending a draft on his bankers for 'the sum specified less the £9 thou hast not advanced Edwd Cherry. - I feel for him and should £10 be required to help him to move to the country I shall be willing to give it to him'. He concludes regarding the filling of Cherry's place, and 'the maintenance of the school and library'.

Three pages, 8vo, fold marks, chipped, pinholes and spikehole in centre, but mainly good with text clear and complete. He apologises for not writing sooner and discusses a book he has sent, firstly the binding, then the content in which the lives and deaths of the debauched Callistus and the virtuous Sophronius are contrasted, illustrated with a quotation from Young's "Night Thoughts".[viz. the scarce [Mulso, Thomas]. "Callistus: or, the man of fashion. And Sophronius: or, the country gentleman". In three dialogues. Dublin: printed by John Exshaw, 1769 - presumably he sees himself as the contented country gentleman - see Note below]. He reports with eulogy the death of his grandfather [part of the evidence for the identification of Daniel - Gent. Mag. in article on Samuel Rogers family (1856), says that his grandfather "appears" to have died in 1775]. He hopes to see Bromley in London and encourages a prompt reply. He then adds an original poem: "The following piece of Poetry, (on this charming season) the first I ever attempted in this kind of verse I submit to your impartial judgment. | On the Spring. || 1. | Far to the North dread winter flies, | And fragrant flowers meet our eyes | And woods arrayed in Green, | While th'airy warblers melting tale, | Melodious echo's [sic] thro' the vale, | And num'rous flocks are seen | [. . .]" Two further stanzas )also AABCCB, follow. Note: Daniel, elder brother of Samuel Rogers, went to Cambridge, trained as a barrister but "settled down in the country as a married man of strong literary tastes and no literary ambition." ["Samuel Rogers and His Circle"] When at Cambridge, his fellow student, Egerton Brydges, commented that he "never saw one of his compositions" . He became a "great reader" and student of Eastern languages ["Early Life of Samuel Rogers"]. This letter provides evidence that at least when young he had literary ambition. I have traced no other surviving MS material in his hand.

Three volumes, small 8vo, pp. [xii], 351, [1] errata; [ii], 352-687, [1], 697-709, [1 blank, [2] advertisements; [xx], 305, [1] blank, [9] table, [5] advertisements; with engraved frontispiece and title page in vol. I, engraved title page in vol. II, and frontispiece and title page in vol. III; a very good, complete copy in contemporary panelled calf, stoutly rebacked; with new endpapers. First edition of all three volumes, with the third volume being a reissue of the original edition of 1701. A remarkable achievement, both by poet and by engraver. Foxon W328 (volumes I-II) and W326 (volume III). Foxon's collation of the second volume seems not quite to match this one, but this does appear to be complete.
