No Binding. Zustand: Good. From the estate of Norman Elder (1939-2003), the self-described "explorer, author, architect, [Olympic] equestrian, cinematographer." The present archive, housed in 15 bankers boxes, consists of almost 17,000 color slides, 20+ reels of 16mm film, 4 copies of Elder s monographs, 12 artworks, and 5 banke…rs boxes of textual material. During his frequent expeditions, Elder collected animals and artifacts for zoos and natural history museums, coming to transform his own home in Toronto into a modern-day Wunderkammer (The Elder Museum). From these experiences Elder would publish four books, juxtaposing post-Surrealist, psychedelic aesthetics with forewords from the likes of Lady Eaton and Prince Philip. Elder s unrealized vision, however, was more ambitious. In the midst of his field notes from Borneo, Elder sketched the prospectus for a proto-reality TV show entitled "Elder s explorations: His 40 expeditions into the remotest corners of the Earth;" to be completed by 1990. The scope of the present archive is testament to Elder s remarkable commitment to the exploration of human being: "i fly to the surrealistic. to the weak. to the strong.
