Soft cover. Zustand: Near Fine. 1st Edition. Colour printed map 87x105cm, folded in its original buff printed envelope 24x30cm. Map fine with some creasing, envelope very good. This sheet covers the southern edge of the Rub al Khali into the Eastern Aden Protectorate (Hadhramaut). This was a product of the groundbreaking mapping project USGS conducted for the Saudi Government with Aramco during 1956-63. This mapped Saudi Arabia in 21 Quadrangles on a 1/500K scale with one series for geology (I-200A to I-220A) and another for geography (I-200B to I-220B). It involved some of the most eminent geologists of the day, among them Glen Brown (USGS), Richard Bramkamp and Max Steineke (Aramco's early pioneers). The work provided the foundation for the Saudi Arabian Mineral Exploration Project launched in 1963, coordinated by Brown from Jeddah. Titled and captioned with Glossary and compilation sources in English and Arabic, features include settlements (including forts, ruins, cultivated areas, date gardens). Transport covers from roads to camel trails, rail and landing fields. Hydrographic features include wells, drilled water wells, wadis etc. Hypsographic features include types of sand, terrain, sabhkah, silt flats etc.…

Soft cover. Zustand: Near Fine. 1st Edition. This sheet covers important and highly sensitive locations lying within the interiors of Abu Dhabi and Oman. Colour printed map 85x102cm, folded in its original buff printed envelope 24x30cm. Map fine with some creasing, envelope very good. Without defined frontiers, this sheet covers key locations to the east including Hafit, Jebel Akhdar, Ibri, Fahud (Jubayl Fuhud), Dank, and Yanqul, and to the west, Liwa Oasis / Al Batin. Hafit appears at the northernmost edge, part of Buraimi, which the Saudis had claimed since 1949 when an Aramco exploration party accompanied by Saudi guards crossed a line the British had negotiated between Abu Dhabi and Oman. The Saudis did not recognise the line, leading to conflict in 1952-55 and uncertainty. Ibri until recently lay at the northernmost point of the Imamate of Oman which had been supported by Saudi Arabia, but was defeated and dissolved by the British backed Sultanate of Muscat during the Jebel Akhdar War (1954-59). Petroleum Development Oman (formed by the Iraq Petroleum Company to run the concession) had been exploring in and around Fahud since 1954. This map was drawn just before the first commercial discoveries at Jibal in 1962 (labelled here as Wadi al Jabal), Natih in 1963 and Fahud in 1964. Settlements are connected by the Darb Al Malalih, which skirts around Jubayl Fuhud. At the western edge is a string of named oasis settlements forming part of Al Jiwa (Al Liwa) and Al Batin, drawn clearly at the northernmost extent of the Rub al Khali, a little above what is today the UAE-Saudi border. This was a product of the groundbreaking mapping project USGS conducted for the Saudi Government with Aramco during 1956-63.
