Anders Gustaf Ekeberg (Stockholm, January 1767-Uppsala, 11 February 1), "a poet, and assistant professor of chemistry at Uppsala from 1794, continued to teach there although in his later years he was very deaf and nearly blind. He discovered tantalum (1802) in an analysis of a mineral from Ytterby, in the course of which he confirmed Gadolin's discovery of yttria. In a research on the mineral gadolinite he found that on fusion with potash before the blowpipe it gives a red mass, but this was not due to manganese. On dissolving in water, the red solution became green (likt den bekante Chamaeleon) and deposited red ferric oxide; he proved that this result could be obtained with oxide of iron, and thus rediscovered potassium ferrate, which had been obtained by Stahl. Ekeberg investigated calcium phosphate in bones, mentioning that Proust in 1790 had announced the unexpected discovery of this 'animal earth' in mineral form in Estramadura.8Ekeberg published other analyses of minerals and was examiner of Berzelius's dissertation on a mineral water."
