Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Charles XII's planned conquest of Norway died with him at Fredriksten fortress on 30 November 1718 (OS), and the small Swedish-Finnish army simultaneously besieging Trondheim was ordered to return to Sweden. Setting off on the final stage across the mountains on New Year's Day 1719 the army was struck by a blizzard harsher than any in living memory, and an orderly withdrawal turned into what has become infamously known as the Carolean Death March. That army was commanded by General Carl Gustav Armfelt, one of the great and tragic figures of Finnish and Swedish history, hero of Finland's brave but ultimately hopeless struggle against Russia under Peter the Great during the Great Northern War 1700-21.This book draws on much primary source material to describe Armfelt's military career. He was already an experienced soldier at the outbreak of the war having spent 11 years in the army of Louis XIV. The book describes his role in opposing the relentless march of the Russian forces in rolling back the eastern frontier of the Swedish empire from his Ingrian homeland through Finland and into Sweden itself. It concludes with the ill-fated Trondheim campaign during the empire's final death throes and Armfelt's final years in Finland after the war.The author, Eirik Hornborg (1879-1965), was one of Finland's leading and most prolific historical writers. The book was originally published in 1953 and this translation, by a descendent of General Armfelt, provides the first comprehensive account in English of the Great Northern War in Finland.…

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - 'The descriptions of the tactical battles and skirmishes showcase an ebb and flow to attacks and counter-attacks, often with an outcome based more on morale than numbers. And this was true on both sides. Naval landings and battles are covered as well. Well done!' - Historical Miniatures Gaming SocietyThe Kingdom Torn Apart is a comprehensive study of the 1808-1809 war between Russia and Sweden-Finland. It is a translation of perhaps the best single-volume account of the conflict, written in the 1950s by Eirik Hornborg, one of Finland's leading and most prolific historical writers. On 21 February 1808, two Russian divisions spearheaded an invasion of Finland. Despite poor defensive preparations and questionable leadership, together with the early loss of the fortress of Sveaborg and much of the archipelago fleet, there was some spirited resistance and the occasional victory against the invaders, but the whole of Finland was occupied by the end of November. Following a remarkable Russian invasion of the Swedish mainland across the frozen Gulf of Bothnia in March 1809 and a coup to overthrow the unpopular King Gustav IV Adolf, the war then continued until September, when a peace settlement ceded Finland to Russia. No comprehensive study of the Finnish War of 1808-1809 has previously been available in English. The Kingdom Torn Apart, a translation of Hornborg's När riket sprängdes, aims to fill this gap. Hornborg drew first and foremost on the nine-volume Swedish General Staff History, supplemented by his meticulous research and critical analysis of source material. He aimed to create a readable and popular work whilst maintaining a strictly objective and scholarly approach. …
