I am pleased to be able to offer this story of romance and social struggle in Virginia at the onset of the Civil War. This small hard cover book (5 ½ x 7 ¾ inches, 533 pages plus 2 pages of publisher's adverts) was published by the Lothrop Publishing Company of Boston, dated 1903 and I believe this is the First Printing of the First Edition. It was illustrated by C.D. Williams, with a rose colored frontispiece and 5 other similar plates (all present and accounted for). What prompted me to offer this book is its attractive design and very clean and bright interior. Condition: This book is in very good condition. There has been some rubbing to the hard covers and light bumping to its corners and spine tips. Inside, a former owner has stamped his name on the front endpaper but that is the only mark I found in the book. The interior pages and plates are all bright and clean throughout, without toning or foxing. Both hinges are intact and the binding is tight, sound and square although perhaps a bit canted to the right. This book is not ex-library or a remainder. C.D. Williams (illustrator).…

George Cary Eggleston (26 November 1839 - 14 April 1911) American author and brother of fellow author Edward Eggleston (1837-1902). Sons of Joseph Cary Eggleston and Mary Jane Craig. After the American Civil War he published a serialized account of his time as a Confederate soldier in The Atlantic Monthly. These serialized articles were later collected and expanded upon and published under the title "A Rebel's Recollections." He also served as an editor of Hearth and Home magazine in the early 1870s. His boyhood home at Vevay, Indiana, known as the Edward and George Cary Eggleston House, was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973. C. D. Williams at the age of eighteen, "began his art career as an illustrator in Chicago newspapers in 1893. From Chicago he went to the art staff of The Saturday Evening Post." In 1898 newspaper advertisements for the December 22 issue of The Saturday Evening Post feature an introduction to the public of "a new artist, C. D. Williams." In 1909 he wrote the essay, "The Illustrator" for inclusion in "The Building of a Book" published by The Grafton Press. On January 27, 1910 he became a founding member of the Society of Illustrators of New York, of which he later served as President. Other founding members included Charles Dana Gibson (1867-1944), Frank DuMond (1865-1951) and Lejaren Hiller. Another member of the club, James Montgomery Flagg (1877-1960), drew his portrait. The book begins: It was a perfect day of the kind that Mr. Lowell has celebrated in song-a day in June. It was, moreover, a day glorified even beyond Mr. Lowell's imagining, by the incomparable climate of southside Virginia. A young man of perhaps seven and twenty, came walking with vigor down the narrow roadway, swinging a stick which he had paused by the wayside to cut. Neuware - Red Sticks, White Sticks and the war in AlabamaThe Creek Indian War, also known as the Red Stick War, took place between 1813-1814 and has been considered by many historians as part of the War of 1812. The Creek-or Muscogee-Indians of Alabama were effectively waging a civil war among themselves. One militant faction, the so called Red Sticks, proposed an aggressive return to the traditional life of their forebears and an end to treaties with and concessions to pioneer settlers represented by the United States government. The White Sticks, opting for peace, inevitably took the opposing view. Although the conflict began as one between the indigenous Indians, American forces, under the soon to be famous Andrew Jackson among others, were drawn into the conflict because much of the animosity was focussed on pioneer settlements. The conflict started in the usual manner of American Indian Wars-with the murder of settler families. The inevitable revenge and retribution that followed-and an escalation of the kind of merciless savagery the Americans had come to expect-culminated in the massacre of 500 settlers, friendly Indians, mixed blood Creeks and soldiers at Fort Mims in an attack led by the Red Stick war leader, Red Eagle. Other forts were also attacked. Panic spread through the region exacerbated by the inability of the Federal government to provide ready aid since it was engaged against the British and their Indian allies to the east. As a consequence much of the fighting was undertaken by militias from Tennessee, Georgia and Mississippi supported by White Stick allies. National hero, Davy Crockett, also served in this conflict. The war ended in a victory for the Americans and put Andrew Jackson on a path to the presidency and the White House.
