Bound in the original bevelled edge decorative cloth covers, this is the First Edition of this classic work on the pearling industry by Streeter who was a prominent London Jeweller and investor, he includes first hand accounts of the everyday dangers, operations and lifestyle of the diving crews on the open seas. The book is 9 inches tall approx., running to 329 pages, and illustrated with plates and a small number of figures within the text. The book is signed and inscribed on the title page with the inscription "With the author's very kind regards Xmas 1886 EWS" Loosely inserted into the book is a three-sided letter sent to the author by a father Thomas Ottley in which he recalls meeting Streeter at his Bond Street Premises in London. An encounter that must have left a lasting impression on his as he recalls the meeting in the letter which is transcribed below. Dear Sir I was immensely interested in the article of The Daily Sketch of this morning + to see your well-known portrait. May I wish you many happy returns of the day; the article says you are now 90 hale & hearty.? Many years ago you were very kind to me when I went to Bond Street to consult you're "The Apostolic Times"?+ you were good enough to give me the sixth edition of your book on Precious Stones & Gems,+ to tell me of your meetings with Cardinal Manning. You also gave me a wonderful treat in showing me a quantity of superb + priceless gems?+ then told me?it was in 1900?that you were retiring on account of failing sight.
