Este libro propone equiparar…este lugar al que las ruinas ocupan en la imaginación moderna. Las ruinas son los frágiles restos materiales de civilizaciones pasadas que la modernidad objetiva, manipula, reproduce, reconstruye y vende como artefactos. Al expandir el concepto de ruinas para incluir su dimensión sonora, se sugiere que las excursiones turísticas, las peregrinaciones religiosas y los recorridos educativos modernos a las ruinas arqueológicas son experiencias análogas a la interpretación de canciones populares reconstruidas y fabricadas que aún sobreviven en los espacios sonoros de la experiencia moderna. Las organizaciones que promueven, mantienen y otorgan acceso a las ruinas modernas se equiparan a las redes de productores, intérpretes, arreglistas, recolectores y editores de canciones populares sefardíes. Estos postulados teóricos se ejemplifican en este trabajo con una serie de estudios, cada uno dedicado a un título del repertorio popular judeoespañol. Originalmente transmitido por los judíos sefardíes, este repertorio había alcanzado ya una difusión global a finales de los años sesenta del siglo XX, generalmente por medio de la intermediación de voces ajenas a la comunidad sefardí. De esta manera, el libro ilustra, a través del detallado análisis de canciones sefardíes que han sobrevivido al colapso de la sociedad sefardí tradicional, cómo las instituciones nacionales y transnacionales, así como otras redes más específicas de agentes individuales judíos y no judíos, intervienen e interactúan a nivel local en la formación, documentación, canonización, producción e interpretación de canciones conceptualizadas y exhibidas como pertenecientes al género del folklore .
