Text is clean and free of marks, binding tight and solid, boards lightly rubbed and worn. In the small town, where everybody knows everybody's first name where everybody knows everybody's business, Sherwood Anderson sees the foundation and the test stone of democracy. The Farm Security Agency is well known for the influence of their photography program, 1935-1944. Photographers and writers were hired to report and document the plight of poor farmers. The Information Division of the FSA was responsible for providing educational materials and press information to the public. Many of the most famous Depression-era photographers were fostered by the FSA project. Walker Evans, Dorothea Lange, and Gordon Parks were three of the most famous FSA alumni. This portrait of small town America is more nostalgic than investigative and features photographs by Ben Shahn, Arthur Rothstein, Walker Evans, Marion Post, Russell Lee, John Vachon and Dorothea Lange. Inscribed on front endpaper to Ben and Bernarda Shahn: "For Bernarda - because she comes from the river country; For Ben - because he might like some of the language; For both - because they understand what this book tried to do," signed "Ed Rosskam" and dated May 1953. A shaken copy, covers dusted and spine faded; Good or better, lacking dustwrapper. Rosskam's photo-documentary of maritime culture on the Ohio and Mississippi rivers. The work is highly reminiscent of Rosskam's photographs for the FSA in the thirties, and the book is in fact dedicated to Rosskam and Shahn's old boss at the FSA, Roy Stryker. Not the prettiest copy around, but a wonderful long inscription and a terrific association. Signed.

A fine copy in slightly worn and spine-darkened jacket. Rosskam's first and only novel, of an American intellectual in Puerto Rico, inspired by the life of Rosskam and the Shahns' mutual friend and FSA colleague Jack Delano. Rosskam and his wife Louise, Ben and Bernarda Shahn all worked together in the photography section of the Farm Security Administration, and later in the Office of War Information, where they produced some of the most memorable images during what has become known as the "Golden Age" of documentary photography.
