First edition of this collection of excerpts and articles written and edited by Edwin John Mann, himself a deaf-mute graduate of The American Asylum at Hartford for the Education and Instruction of the Deaf and Dumb. Founded by Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet, Mason Cogswell, and Laurent Clerc in 181…7 and now known as the American School for the Deaf, the American Asylum at Hartford was the first permanent school for deaf children in the United States. As Oliver Sacks wrote: "The atmosphere at the Hartford Asylum, and at other schools soon to be set up, was marked by the sort of enthusiasm and excitement only seen at the start of grand intellectual and humanitarian adventures" (20). According to Sacks, Mann's book remains an important document of this groundbreaking institution: "This atmosphere breathes from every page of [.] THE DEAF AND THE DUMB by Edwin John Mann, Late Pupil of the Hartford Asylum, published by Hitchcock in 1836" (ibid). THE DEAF AND THE DUMB includes previously published pieces related to the education of the deaf, as well as original poems and compositions by Mann. It also importantly includes an essay on Native American sign language by Major Stephen F. Long ("Indian Language of Signs"). A scarce book in commerce with relevant provenance. 7'' x 4.5''. Original textured cloth with publisher's paper title label to spine. xii, 13-312 pages. This copy deaccessioned from the Clarke Schools for Hearing and Speech library, with their 19th-century paper shelf number label to spine and bookplate to front pastedown. A handwritten accession note from 1899 is additionally penned to the front free endpaper. Page faces mildly foxed. Slight lean, some starting here and there. Overall sound and clean.
