Zustand: Good. 1934. First Edition Thus. 120 pages. Illustrated dust jacket over illustrated paper covered boards and red cloth spine with lettering. Contains black and white and colour illustrations. Pages and binding are presentable with common faults. Text is legible throughout. Some issues present such as cracking, inscriptions, inserts, moderate foxing, tanning and thumb marking. Binding remains firm. Boards have mild shelf wear with light rubbing and corner bumping. Some light marking and sunning. Minor scuffing to edges and corners. Lettering is clear. Unclipped jacket has moderate edge wear with tears, chips, and some areas of loss. Noticeable rubbing and marking.

Zustand: Good. - Large octavo, orange cloth titled in black on the front cover & spine. The covers are bumped with slight fraying to the corners. There is some light staining to the front cover. The spine is faded & soiled with 2 small black stains & with the head & tail chipped & slightly frayed. Title, [1] leaf & 347 pages. 4 color plates, including a frontispiece, by Lacy Hussar. There is an owner's green ink inscription on the verso of the frontispiece. 1 leaf is detached with the front edge slightly roughed. There is occasional light foxing & soiling. Good.

Handsomely rebound with leather spine, with five raised bands and gilt titles, over marbled boards, binding in lovely near fine condition. Inside all pages in near fine condition with no aging or foxing. A very nicely bound copy of the first UK edition of this novel, originally in French "Les Bestiaires" was published in 1926 after Henry De Montherlant traveled extensively, mainly to Spain, where he met and worked with bullfighter Juan Belmonte and wrote this novel about bullfighting and his hero's feverish search for the peacetime equivalents of the physical excitement.

Original price of $3.00 on front flap. A bit of chipping along edges. Spine is faded, but illustrations on DJ remain quite bright. Binding is strong. Title and copyright pages dated 1935. 433 pages. A bit of staining from an old paper clip to pages 188 and 193, but otherwise interior is free of marks or tears. A good copy of this scarce American edition of Vidocq's personal memoirs.
