In den Warenkorb8vo, pp. [vi], vi, [iv], 365, [3] advertisements; three leaves of the preface a bit soiled at edges (where presumably once detached and re-inserted); else a good copy, in old calf, neatly rebacked. First edition. Little seems to be known about the Rev. Edward Manwaring, although he published a few ambitiously learned works in the late 1730s and early 1740s. This book is dedicated to Arthur Onslow, who was Speaker of the Commons for more than thirty years, as thanks for 'particular Favours, You conferr'd upon me many Years since'. The introduction tells us that the purpose of the book is to recommend and render more intelligible the Greek and Latin authors to those who have some knowledge of the languages; and to those who have none, to offer a guide to what is best in them. In other words, this is a convenient crib's guide to the classics, helpful to the less well-educated. In an age of rising literacy and social ambitions, this would have been a most useful handbook. Provenance. 18th century armorial bookplate of Dr Head; 19th century pencil inscription of H.P. Hayden[?]; stamps of Southwell House Library and of Roehampton College.

In den Warenkorb4to, pp. [viii], 78, [1] errata and advertisement; gathering C bound in the wrong order, but quite complete; disbound. First edition, and presumably privately commissioned by the author for his own distribution: it has all the hallmarks of a private hobbyhorse, propounding a theory which was likely to find little favour with scholars. The book was reissued the following year as A recovery of the Latin, Greek, and Hebrew numbers, with the names of Aaron Ward and John Clark in the imprint: one can imagine that they insisted on a more catchy and explanatory title to the author before agreeing to take copies for sale. I can find out nothing about Edward Manwaring: he may have been a clergyman in the diocese of Durham, as he dedicates the book to Edward Chandler, the Bishop, with his 'sincere Thanks for all you favours'. He had published two other books the same year: these were dedicated to Speaker Onslow, and Dr James Douglas; but only one more (in 1744, dedicated to the composer J.C. Pepusch) seems to have come from his pen.
