This work opens with a brief history of Mormonism [p.56-58], followed by a chronological list of events in Utah (beginning with the arrival of the Mormon pioneers in 1847) [p. 59-64]. This is followed by a section that contains an overall look at the Territory of Utah at the time, including; history, mining, social organizations, federal officers, local governments, public buildings, schools, cemeteries, churches, post offices, newspapers, etc. [p.65-85]. This is followed by the directory of Salt Lake [87-173]. This followed by a brief history of the Union Pacific Railroad [182-187]. The remainder of this work is dedicated to Chicago [Ill.], and is titled: 'Chicago: Its Growth and Trade' this includes a brief history and overview and ends with a directory of Chicago businesses (including advertisements). A wealth of period advertisement. The publication of this directory was delayed a bit, because so much labor was required in procuring the information, and "it was also delayed on its transit to the printers by the heavy snow storms which impeded travel through the Rocky Mountains in February and March."- The Publishers. Flake/Draper 7757. Howes S555. Woodward 217.

Erstausgabe
First Edition. Octavo (23cm); royal blue cloth, with titling and decorations stamped in gilt on front cover; marbled endpapers; [2],x,69,[3]pp, with a portrait of Lenox, one map, and illustrations throughout on coated paper. Generically inscribed by the author on a preliminary blank: "From D.H. Lenox / Phoenix Ariz / Jan 18, 1914." Light wear to extremities, some softening to spine ends and corners, and a tiny stain to lower front joint; contents fresh; Near Fine. Lenox's privvately printed history of the first considerable emigration across the unknown West, which he participated in as a youth of 16. While the title page states "Limited Edition Autograph Copy," there is no statement of limitation in any copy we have seen in commerce. Based on auction records, it seems Lenox signed copies fairly infrequently, with the last few appearing in 1958 (Parke Bernet, Bauer). HOWES L255a; GRAFF 2454.
