Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. 1st Edition. large 8vo. pp. 23 p.l., [vii]-xii, 971. 8 plates (1 in colour) & c400 text illus. original cloth. Complimentary slip & Presentation Letter from the Publishers, dated June 28, 1901, and ALS from the author, dated June 25, 1901, both to Col. J.L.H.Neilson, Director General of Medical Services, Canada. Signed by Neilson on title. First Edition. An important work on military hygiene by the Captain of the Medical Department of the US Army, which was adopted by the U.S. Medical Dept. and by Secretary of War, Elihu Root for general distribution among officers of the line and staff. The presentation letter from the publishers invites Neilson's comments and requests advice on how to obtain a roster of Canadian Militia Officers to whose notice they may bring Munson's work. In his letter, Munson addresses Neilson as the representative of the Medical Department of the U.S. Army at the War Department Exhibit at the Pan-American Exposition and states that he would be greatly honored if Neilson would attend so that he may show him their new equipment and appliances and enumerate their special advantages. He further states that several medical officers of the U.S. army and navy are contemplating a trip to the camp of mobilization of the Canadian forces during the stay of the Duke of York, and that he hopes to have the pleasure of seeing Neilson there. Munson was one of the surgeons who attended President William McKinley after he was wounded by an assassin in Buffalo, September 6, 1901. While Professor of Military Hygiene at the Army Service School in Washington, in 1912, Munson designed the military field shoe, variously known as the "Munson Last," the "hobnail brogan" of World War I, and the "G.I. shoe" of World War 2. Following his retirement from the army as a brigadier general, he became the first professor of Preventive Medicine at the University of California. Signed by Author(s).
