A title in the popular late-19th-century illustrated series, The Adventure Series, by publisher T. Fisher Unwin. The title page shows both publishers, but only Macmillan is on the spine, designating this copy for the late-Victorian American market. Original red cloth with black stamped design and gilt lettering on front and spine, pp. 521. Features 6 full-page plate illustrations in b/w, including a frontispiece portrait with tissue guard, and a fold-out facsimile of an autographed letter written by Edward John Trelawny himself, tipped into the text pages (it's a 3-page letter on two pages, the 2nd page being double in size). This story blends real-life maritime experiences with romantic fiction, as it follows a rebellious English youth escaping a tyrannical father to live a turbulent life as a sailor, privateer, and adventurer in the Indian Ocean, East Indies, and-beyond. Overall condition is Very Good. Binding is secure. Spine is faded with some tears at the top. Cover is brighter with some scattered grazing and bumped corners. Inside front are two previous owner marks: one in pencil on the pastedown, the other a personalized blind emboss library stamp at the bottom corner of the front free endpaper. Inside joints are splitting but holding. Pages are mildly age toned, else clean and unmarked. Letter has small tears on each page at bottom left edge where one pulls upward, else in great shape. Jacket gently rubbed at joints with toning and dust-soiling overall. Verso heavily toned. Board corners and spine ends very gently bumped and interior lightly toned at margins with bookseller's label to rear pastedown, otherwise a Near Fine copy in a Very Good or better dust jacket. First written in 1909, this play wasn't published until after Lawrence's death.
