George Everton Woodward (1829-1905) was a New York architect and the author of a number of similar guidebooks. This is a post-Civil-War version of the kind of architectural guides written Benjamin, Lafever and Brown. Its designs for mansard mansions, ornamental cottages, Italian villas and the like reflect the rise of the American suburb and the wealth and vaunting ambitiousness of a triumphant North.
