Zustand: GOOD. First or early edition. The 11 book Poppy Ott series was an offshoot of the author's very popular Jerry Todd series, featuring one of Jerry's buddies. However, in contrast to Jerry's middle class upbringing, Poppy is first introduced as a boy tramp, compelled to wander around the country by his shiftless father, but he soon shows his worth - and thus earned his own series. In creating the character of Poppy Ott, Edwards was drawing on both his poverty-ridden youth and innate business acumen to express his philosophy of getting ahead in life. Poppy is depicted as a very likable but real go-getter, dreaming up money-making projects and organizing them. Illustrated by Bert Salg with a glossy frontispiece and three internal plates, 238 pp. plus 10 pp of publisher's ads. Lists to #4 in this series in the back. Good only in light red cloth with yellow and black lettering (some fraying at the ends of the spine, previous owner's name, corners bumped but still a tight and sturdy copy).

Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Very Good-. Salg, Bert (illustrator). First Edition. Bound in red cloth with titles in yellow-gold outlined in black. Spine titles in black only. 258 pages with three pages of publisher's ads at the rear. With a frontispiece and three internal illustrations on coated paper by Bert Salg, all present. Volume 11 in the Jerry Todd series, issued in early 1932, prior to the large number of format changes that G&D put into effect in May of that year. This copy is in the series' first format: blank endpapers and yellow-gold lettering to the front cover. Ads at the rear list books by Leo Edwards, the same list that appears on the rear panel of the dust wrapper (see photos), Pee-Wee Harris through "Turns Detective" (1930), and a list of Buddy Books for Boys, a series that G&D dropped in May of 1932 (another good indication that this copy was an early issue; this ad would not appear after the format change). The dust jacket (see photos) has the book's synopsis on the front flap, a list of Jerry Todd titles through "Editor-in-Grief" on the rear flap (the title preceding "Caveman"), and the "They Demanded an Encore" blurb on the rear panel. There are no titles listed here that were published after 1932. The rear flap and panel also indicate a very early printing for this copy. The jacket has the catalogue printed in green on the verso; printings from after May of 1932 would carry this catalogue printed in black until sometime in 1934, when it was removed. The cloth shows mild handling wear, mostly smudges that occur when someone reads the book with the jacket off. There is a short crease to the front cover between the "e" and "r" in "Jerry", and the book has a touch of edgewear at the extremities. The dust jacket has the obvious chip to the front panel, which also touches the head of the spine; there is light chipping at the head and heel and some rubbing at the folds. See the photos for the tape repairs to the verso; there is no tape to the obverse. The book has solid hinges with the binding still square. A clean, tight, unmarked copy; the jacket is now in mylar. Mattson & Davis 34500, format 1. Size: 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall.
