In den Warenkorb8vo, pp. viii, 265, [1] imprint, [ix]-xvi index, [1] corrigenda; a couple of leaves starting from the binding near the front, else a fine copy, in contemporary blue-green calf, covers stamped in blind with basket-weave pattern, gilt borders, spine gilt; plain endpapers, marbled edges. First edition. A collection of poetry by Edward Coxe: despite the title page description, he appears to have lived at Bath, and had been brought up with Lord Braybrooke (father of the editor of Pepys), to whom he dedicates this collection. He particularly admires Petrarch, and the poems on pp. 125-163 are imitations from the Italian original. Many of these are sonnets, as are his own occasional poems in the first half of the book one addressed to Richard Heber, one to a nightingale, and one to the poet Willam Lisle Bowles (p. 82). This is a special copy, because at the end of the volume there is a manuscript sonnet by Coxe, presumably written in his own hand, addressed to 'Miss Elliott', beginning 'Lady of Egland! if these artless flow'rs'. This is not a mistake for 'England': one Thomasine Anne Elliott owned a house called Egland (built in 1804), close to Awliscombe in Devon. Perhaps she was also a visitor to Bath, and Coxe knew her there; but the implication in the poem is that they were old acquaintances. The book also has the modern booklabel of Esme Nicoll, Egland, Honiton. A quick search of the internet shows that she was born Edith Sophie Mary Elliott, and was the great-niece of Thomasine Elliott; and that she married John Nicoll in 1922. She was the founder of Honiton Museum, and died in 1973 at the age of 94.
