First edition. Two volumes. Oblong quarto (Part I: 275mm x 250mm. Part II: 275mm x 275mm). Publisher's original brown cloth with gilt titles to the spine, without dustwrapper as issued. Illustrated throughout in black and white. Part I with portrait frontispiece, halftone plate of the Bruce photographic telescope and 51 full-page silver photographic prints mounted on linen. Part II with 50 black and white charts and tables. An excellent better than very good copy, the binding square and firm, with light mild bumping to the spine tips, the cloth a little marked and lightly rubbed to the extremities. The contents, with a previous owner's name to the front endpaper of each volume, are intermittently spotted mainly to the first and last pages, with some offsetting of the portrait frontispiece onto the previous page and tissue guard. The facing page of plate 48 has a small tear to the bottom edge with associated creasing, which has also creased the lower border of plate 48 (not affecting the image). The prints have occasional silvering to the extremities, very light surface rubbing and offsetting in places, and are otherwise in near fine condition throughout. A pioneer of celestial photography and one of the greatest observational astronomers of his time, E. E. Barnard made several important contributions to the field, including the discovery of Jupiter's fifth moon, numerous comets and the star with the greatest known proper motion (named Barnard's Star in his honour). He became interested in astronomy as a child, buying a small telescope with which he discovered comets, nebulae and other celestial objects. As a teenager he worked in a photography gallery in Nashville, learning photographic skills he would later apply to the celestial field. In 1888, the Lick Observatory offered Barnard a position as astronomer, where he began photographing the Milky Way, followed by tenures as Professor of Practical Astronomy at the University of Chicago and astronomer at Yerkes Observatory. In 1897, the university was gifted funding from Miss Catherine W Bruce for the purchase of a telescope and observatory allowing him to continue his work, with the Carnegie Institution providing funding for the production of his seminal Atlas in 1907. Ever meticulous, he personally examined each one of the 35,700 photographic prints produced for the edition, rejecting those not up to his high standards. The images and descriptive text were completed before his death in 1923, the work seen through the press by the director of Yerkes Observatory, Edwin B. Frost, with Barnard's niece and personal assistant Mary Calvert completing the 'Catalogue of Dark Objects' and 'Tables of Objects', which she had worked on under his supervision. A beautiful copy of this scarce and important work, published in an edition of just seven hundred copies. Further details and images for any of the items listed are available on request. ONE OF 400 COPIES printed on Van Gelder hand-made paper, with several head- and tail-pieces, decorated initials and colophon in red, 10 plates tipped in on blue paper pages following text leaves, endpapers with very faint spotting, fly-leaf with Meynell family presentation ink inscription: 'Christmas 1915, To dear Viola with love from Georgia & Everard' and later pencil inscription 'bought from my cousin Jake Dallyn Autumn 1982, Vivan Meynell' (see below) pp. x, 15, [iii], [xxiv, including plates], large 4to, parchment-backed blue paper boards with printed labels on upper board and spine, parchment toned and slightly spotted, backstrip label with slight damage, a few faint marks, matching slip case with abrasions, good. An attractive Mosher production, featuring the visionary works of Edward Calvert, follower of Blake, friend of Samuel Palmer and fellow member of the artistic group, The Ancients. These engravings, only seen by his friends during his lifetime, were first published by his son in 1893. The presentation inscription relates to the children of Alice, author and poet, and Wilfrid Meynell - Everard, sculptor and founder of the Serendipity bookshop and Viola, novelist, poet, (and mother of Jake Dallyn), both siblings of Francis, founder of the Nonesuch Press.

Portland Maine, Thomas Bird Mosher. Fine, jacket faded to spine and with a small chip to head of upper panel, slipcase faded and rubbed at extremities, partially unopened. The special copies of Mosher books printed on Japanese vellum are rarely found in their original paper bindings, and almost never in such fine unrestored condition A strikingly well-preserved example of one of the most typographically successful of Mosher's publications, which appeared as item number 8 in the Grolier club's exhibition 'A Century for The Century,' a selection of 100 of the finest printed books of the 20th century. Mosher established something of a reputation for issuing reprints of work without feeling it strictly necessary to obtain the permission of those who owned the rights, leading to his earning the delightful nickname 'The Pirate Prince of Portland': Ten Spiritual Designs is a typical example, with the Calvert prints reproduced from photographs, portions of the text taken from the Century Guild Hobby Horse, and even the initial letters pilfered from Pissarro's Eragny Press. .

Original wood engraving, printed on thick wove paper. Third State of the engraving. 83 x 128 mms. Framed. The earliest of Calvert's visionary wood engravings, made in the year of Blake's death who had such a strong influence on Calvert and this work in particular. The first state was printed by the artist in only six impressions. This third state was the one printed in Calvert's first formal publicaiton "A Memoir of Edward Calvert, Artist; by his Third Son' in 1893, the printing is from, and in the Carfax Portfolio of 1904 for which a further 30 impressions were issued. The block from which this was printed is now in the British Museum.
