Earth First! is a group of radical environmentalists that formed in the American Southwest in the spring of 1980, founded by Dave Foreman, Mike Roselle, Howie Wolke, Bart Koehler, and Ron Kezar, among others. Earth First! quickly came to national attention with their "cracking" of Glen Canyon Dam activist stunt, which was performed and filmed in the spring of 1981. Edward Abbey is considered to be the "literary father" of the group. "Earth First! is the beginning of the new, bold environmental movement. And 'Earth First! The Radical Environmental Journal' is its voice. No compromise in the defense of Mother Earth!" (Dave Foreman, Editor). Solid text block, sunning to spine, faint toning to endpapers, occasional annotation, price crossed out on rear cover, a very good example. Robinson [McCullough] Family bookplate on verso of front cover. Inscribed by Colleen McCullough on half title: "Dear Ed & Lucy, Ignore the bookplate! Cancelled. Much love / Col." Also laid-in fax from Lucy Perkins to a "Barbara W." on McCullough's letterhead. Colleen McCullough (1937-2015), an Australian author, was best known for her novel The Thorn Birds. She married Ric Robinson, a member of the Norfolk Legislative Assembly, in 1984. Dr. Edward J. Perkins (1928-2020) served as U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, as well as Liberia, South Africa, and Australia throughout his 25-year foreign service career. In 1986 President Ronald Reagan appointed Perkins to serve as ambassador to South Africa in hopes of fending off a congressional override to his veto of economic sanctions against the country. It was a controversial decision amidst apartheid in South Africa, and many Black leaders urged Perkins to not take the role. Perkins accepted the position and served until 1989, one year before Nelson Mandela was released from prison. He was appointed U.N. Ambassador by George H.W. Bush in 1992, serving for one year.
