Trade paperback. Zustand: Very good. George Bing (illustrator). Second Printing [Stated]. xiv, 322 pages. Illustrations. Map. Footnotes. Index. Inscribed by Edward Teller on the half-title page. Inscription reads To Vic with best wishes Edward. This was inscribed to Vic Reis a senior U.S. national security official. The first draft of this book was based on lectures given by the author in 1975: the Harvey Prize Lectures, Technion; and Distinguished Visiting Lectures of the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics of the State University of New York at Buffalo in 1975. One chapter was based on a lecture delivered at Acadia University, Nova Scotia. Edward Teller (January 15, 1908 - September 9, 2003) was a Hungarian-American theoretical physicist. Teller was known both for his scientific ability and for his volatile personality. Teller was an early member of the Manhattan Project, charged with developing the first atomic bomb, and proposed the solid pit implosion design which was successful. He made a serious push to develop the first fusion-based weapons as well, but these were deferred until after World War II. He did not sign the Szilard petition, which sought to have the bombs detonated as a demonstration, but not on a city, but later agreed that Szilard was right, and the bombs should not have been dropped on a defenseless civilian population. He was a co-founder of Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, and was both its director and associate director for many years. He was noted for for his advocacy for nuclear energy development, a strong nuclear arsenal, and a vigorous nuclear testing program. Victor Herbert Reis (born 11 February 1935) is a technologist and former U.S. government official, best known as the architect and original sponsor of the U.S. nuclear Stockpile Stewardship Program and its associated Accelerated Strategic Computing Initiative (ASCI), which resulted in the creation of several new generations of government-sponsored supercomputers. Reis was Assistant Director for National Security and Space in the Office of Science and Technology Policy in the Executive Office of the President, 1981-1983. Leaving government, he became senior vice president for strategic planning at the Science Applications International Corp., 1983-1989. He then returned to government as, first, Deputy Director of the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), 1989-1990; then that agency's Director, 1990-1991; and subsequently Director of Defense Research and Engineering at the U.S. Department of Defense. Reis served as Assistant Secretary for Defense Programs in the U.S. Department of Energy from 1993 to 1999, where he led the development of the DOE's Stockpile Stewardship Program, which was formally established by the 1994 National Defense Authorization Act (Public Law 103-160). After the U.S. moratorium on nuclear testing in 1992, Reis was among the first to recognize the need for a new, formal program in maintaining the U.S. nuclear stockpile, replacing data formerly obtained by testing with data from supercomputer simulation and small-scale non-nuclear experiments. In 2005, he became senior advisor in the Office of the Secretary, Department of Energy. Reis was also a member of the Strategic Advisory Group of the U.S. Strategic Command.

Hardcover. Zustand: Very good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Good. George Bing (illustrator). First Printing [Stated]. xiv, 322 pages. Illustrations. Map. Footnotes. Index. Signed by Edward Teller on the half-title page with the note "the minor contributor". Also signed just below by George Bing of the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory who was thanked on pages xiii and xiv for his 'ingenious illustrations." The first draft of this book was based on lectures given by the author in 1975: the Harvey Prize Lectures, Technion; and Distinguished Visiting Lectures of the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics of the State University of New York at Buffalo in 1975. One chapter was based on a lecture delivered at Acadia University, Nova Scotia. Edward Teller (January 15, 1908 - September 9, 2003) was a Hungarian-American theoretical physicist. He was a co-founder of Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, and was both its director and associate director for many years. He was noted for for his advocacy for nuclear energy development, a strong nuclear arsenal, and a vigorous nuclear testing program. George Franklin Bing, born Dec. 16, 1924 in Barberton, Ohio, was an Eagle Scout, a first lieutenant in the Army Air Corps (1943-46) and a nuclear physicist at the Laboratory (1954-1988). Bing joined the Army in January of 1943 and served in the Pacific in 1945. Eventually his unit was sent to Japan and then home in April of 1946. After returning from WWII he obtained a bachelor's degree in physics from Oberlin College. He started and completed a graduate program in physics at Case Institute of Technology, earning a doctorate in 1954. He took a job at the then-University of California Radiation Laboratory, and stayed at the Lab until his retirement in 1988. On three occasions George took leaves of absence from the Lab. In 1961 he took a position at the Pentagon to the Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA) to direct the VELA program. In 1967 he went to Vietnam for four months to serve on the staff of Gen. Westmoreland. In July 1967 he took a position as the scientific adviser at SHAPE (Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe). He returned to LLNL in 1970 where he completed his career.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - A proper understanding of the structural organization of the plant body is essential to any study in plant biology. Experimental studies in vivo and in situ will lead to structural, physiological, and cellular changes of the experimental material. To study macroscopic and microscopic changes, different histological methods and microtechniques can be used as they provide valuable information of the experimental system. In addition, the observed structural changes allow investigators to set hypothesis for further studies based on one's own observation. Thus, proper selection and utilization of microtechniques are a must for the success of a research program. At present, an up-to-date collection of protocols are not readily available in the literature. The latest work in plant microtechniques was published in 1999 by Ruzin but many others are no longer in print [e.g., Jensen (1964); O'Brien and McCully (1981)]. Furthermore, a majority of published works focus on techniques related to general processing and staining procedures. A comprehensive treatment that encompasses broader applications of microtechniques to other disciplines is lacking [e.g., archeology, wood science, etc.]. There is a need to create a comprehensive volume of botanical methods and protocols which includes traditional and novel techniques that can be used by researchers in plant science and investigators in other disciplines that require plant microtechniques in their research and teaching. This book covers a wide variety of applications and brings them up-to-date to make them understandable and relevant, especially to students using the methods for the first time. It is our intention to create a useful reference for plant histology and related methods that will serve as a foundation for plant scholars, researchers, and teachers in the plant sciences.
