Der Einband ist auch staubig, fleckig, bestoßen und berieben. Schnitt staubig. Die Seiten sind überwiegend sauber und ohne Flecken, mit etlichen Bleistiftanstreichungen. Auch Bemerkung in Bleistift im Nachsatz. Diverse Knicke. Seiten ungeschnitten. Sir Edward Albert Sharpey-Schafer (eigentlich Edward Albert Schäfer, * 2. Juni 1850 in Hornsey bei London; 29. März 1935 in North Berwick, East Lothian, Schottland) war ein englischer Physiologe. Scharpey-Schafer ist Erfinder der nach ihm benannten Schafer-Methode zur künstlichen Beatmung. 1910 vermutete Sharpey-Schafer, dass eine einzige chemische Substanz in der Bauchspeicheldrüse bei Patienten mit Diabetes mellitus fehle. Diese Substanz nannte er Insulin. Nach anderen Quellen geht die Postulierung eines entscheidenden Hormons in der Bauchspeicheldrüse und die Namensnennung Insulin" auf den belgischen Pathologen Jean de Meyer (1878-1934) im Jahre 1909 zurück. Scharpey-Schafer war von 1899 bis 1933 Professor für Physiologie an der University of Edinburgh. 1924 erhielt er für seine wissenschaftlichen Verdienste die Copley Medal. In this seminal paper in neurophysilogy Horsley and Schäfer definitely showed that total removal of the occipital lobe produced permanently blind animals, but only if the lesion extended on the ventral surface into the temporal lobe. First printing of this pioneer paper introducing the concept of NEURAL NETWORKS and initiating the "NEURON DOCTRINE"."His early histological work on the nerves of the jellyfish Aurelia aurita led to his very early promotion of the idea that nerve cells are structurally and functionally independent units. This later became known as the ?neuron doctrine? Schäfer was led to study the structure of the subumbrellar nervous plexus in Aurelia aurita. He found that each nerve fiber was distinct from and nowhere structurally continuous with any other" he thought it reasonable to assume fiber-to-fiber transmission from "inductive action," possibly electric, the result being the same as if there were a real network."(DSB).
