Hardcover. Zustand: Near Fine. Presentation album. Oblong 12mo. measuring about 4" x 7". Screw bound in leather over boards, containing 33 linen backed gelatin silver photographs measuring about 3" x 5", all captioned in the negative. Gift inscription dated in 1913 inside front cover, minor wear to album, images are near fine with some slight curling and a little silvering; one with a small scuff. After returning home from attending Heidelberg and Freiburg Universities in Germany, Edward Rumely created one of the first progressive boarding schools in the United States in 1907 "to teach boys to live" by focusing on "hand and muscle work as well as brain work and development of the mind." The curriculum was based upon tenants expounded by Leo Tolstoy and Germanic ideas of a "new order." The school was highly regarded by both educators and the public and quite successful until anti-German sentiment forced its closure when the U.S. entered World War One. Photos include students working in fields and shops, the baseball and football teams, temporary tent lodging, and several of a series of the school boys constructing school facilities, particularly the gymnasium.
