The magazine Athena, was created in 1924, by a group of researchers and professors from the University of Concepción, who chaired by Enrique Molina Garmendia, founder and rector of this educational establishment, were established as an organizing commission for this magazine. From the beginning, the University of Concepción, proposed to make this publication, in addition to the official body of the university, a platform to expose the thinking and work of intellectuals, politicians, artists and academics. For this reason, it was conceived, from the first issue, as an open, autonomous, integral and receiving space of all the areas that make up the culture: science, art and literature. In the first period of the magazine, 1924 and 1930, ten issues were published per year (March to December). In addition, two directives were followed. The second directed by Eduardo Barrios. During his performance, the Athena Prize began to be awarded to the most outstanding book of the year, both in the literary and scientific fields and in historical research. From 1930 onwards, under the direction of Raúl Silva Castro, the literature area became more relevant and the reviews section was extended more and more pages. Subsequently, Domingo Melfi assumed, who remained until 1945. The following period, that of Luis Durand, Athena was almost exclusively dedicated to the literary area. Although, in the first numbers this tendency was not so marked, little by little stories, poems, essays, literary reviews and book comments were integrated. Luis Durand maintained during the direction of the magazine, an editorial of his own authorship, entitled "Points of view", in which he delivered a critical view of the literary environment of the time. At that time in the magazine, it was mostly prominent writers who collaborated with literary and non-academic articles. They also published their poetry, stories and novels: Pablo Neruda, Margarita Aguirre, Amanda Labarca, Gonzalo Rojas, Hernán del Solar, Miguel Arteche, among many others. On the other hand, essays and critical articles by recognized foreign intellectuals, such as Albert Camus, Jean Paul Sartre, T.S. Elliot, Pío Baroja and Paul Valéry, were included at that time. In addition, some special editions were published, which were dedicated exclusively to the tribute of writers and literary genres.
