Black and white woodblock print map measuring 31 x 80.5cm. Map folds into original yellow paper-covered card cover (16 x 8.5cm) with paper title label. This copy lacks the lower cover and the back exposed panel is lightly worn and soiled, neat washi tissue repairs along fold, some light dampstains and soiling to map although most are scarcely noticeable, upper 2.5cm of cover title label is missing. Although showing signs of use, this map is still quite charming. This fascinating map of travelling routes in Edo period Japan brings out a totally different perspective on land, topography and distance. The map covers the mainland Japan from the Tohoku region to Wakayama, including Edo, Kyoto and Osaka. The travelling routes, such as Tokaido and Nakasendo are also marked. The map does not show north-south and east-west. It shows how the roads are connected and the distances between towns and villages. The map was probably used for pilgrimages to famous temples and shrines, such as Zenko-ji, and Ise Shrine as they are clearly marked. It also covers the main travelling routes between Edo and Kyoto with the distances and travelling fares (including tips). The top end of title label is partially missing and the correct map title and its compiler are not known to us.…

Folded black and white kawaraban woodblock with map showing Tokyo's red light districts. 30.3 x 39.4cm. Light rubbing in one place upper margin, a little worming and small closed tear in lower margin. Sheet has been backed with washi. Good copy. This late Edo period kawaraban print provides a wealth of information on the diverse aspects of sexual behaviour and attraction between men and women during this era. Following the traditional kawaraban style, the print offers a detailed and varied glimpse into the lives of the time. A fascinating map of Edo's red-light districts, playfully drawn with phallus-shaped lines, occupies the lower centre. Eight different types of sexual toys are displayed on the left, while service fees for brothels are listed above the map. The print even delves into compatibility between the sexes based on zodiac signs, along with methods for predicting a baby's sex before birth. During the Edo period, eroticism was viewed as another form of popular entertainment, particularly for men, and was widely accepted as a pastime for adults.…

Very large hand coloured folding map, 200 x 189.5cm at the largest section, six panels have been removed from one corner while another two and a half panels have been included along one edge to show the reach of the city. Some insect damage repaired with washi but overall in very good condition. An exceptionally beautiful and detailed rare map of Tokyo in the Edo period (the latter half of the 17th century). This remarkable delicately executed map of Edo around the 1660s offers a wealth of detailed information about the city and its population during the early Edo period. Hundreds of names of landholders are neatly recorded. Family crests or mons are shown across Edo indicating locations of daimyo's (or feudal lord) mansions, temples depicted with even ferry routes named! Edo Castle takes centre stage, with the Sumida River flowing from north to south and emptying into the bay. Here, several boats are delicately illustrated in colour, some carrying images of lucky gods. Prominently displayed in red is the mansion of Sakai Shurinosuke, namely Sakai Tadanao (1630-1682), who received the rank of Shuri-Taiyfu (????) from the Emperor. He was a daimyo from the domain of Obama (Fukui Prefecture) and successor to his prominent father, Sakai Tadakatsu (1587-1662). Tadakatsu served as one of the most trusted ministers of Tokugawa Iemitsu (1604-1651), the third shogun. His son, Tadanao, was active as a daimyo between 1656 and 1677. A handwritten section at the top right details the Sakai family's fire responsibility area. The borders are defined by street names and landmarks, and distances are listed from the main mansion and residence to Ushigome-mon, one of Edo Castle's gates. In summary, the area of responsibility is approximately 10 cho (1 kilometre) east to west and 12 cho (1.2 kilometres) north to south. Though not explicitly dated beyond the mention of "November," the map was probably created in the 1660s. The Meireki Fire (1657) caused a large scale devastation around the castle and the Tokugawa government heightened the need of fire fighting activities in the capital. The government, firstly, allocated responsible areas for each daimyo to carry out fire fighting and, secondly, started to produce large maps of Edo based on actual measurement. Consequently, this map was most probably produced around the 1660s. Furthermore, the dating is supported by the presence of Ryogoku Bridge, built in 1659, and the absence of Shin-Ohashi Bridge, which wasn't constructed until 1693. Additionally, the map provides detailed information on residents, street names around the castle and other areas, with major temples and shrines highlighted in colour illustrations. This truly exceptional map leaves many questions unanswered. Indeed who gathered the vast amount of information to be found on the map? What was the exact purpose behind its creation? The more we examine this map the more we learn and the more questions we have. However it is very clear that this rare and beautiful manuscript map provides a depth of information about Edo in the 1660s rarely found, making the map a vital key to the city at this period. A handsome map which calls for more research. We have not been able to find a similar map nor have we ever handled anything comparable.…

Large black and white woodblock kawaraban featuring a map of Tokyo Bay printed on two joined sheets, 41 x 63cm. Central vertical fold where the sheets are joined. Occasional worming, a few neat washi paper repairs on the reverse but overall very good. This black and white kawaraban woodblock pictorial map of Tokyo Bay and surrounding area would have been published soon after the arrival of an American fleet led by Commodore Perry in 1853. The arrival came as a great shock to the Tokugawa government and the population in general. To protect the country the government ordered many feudal lords to send their troops to defend many positions around the bay as indicated on the map. At the top of the sheet thirty nine feudal lords' names, their location, crests and marking indicators appear alongside the Uraga local magistrates' names. Many kawarabans or newsheets reporting defence plans were published and distributed widely soon after the arrival of foreign ships to an interested - and very concerned! - general public. This kawaraban shows the defence positions and ships, each marked by their lords' names and flags. The total strength of the Japanese defence at this time is reported here as: 600 canons, 15,000 guns, and 336,380 troops.…

R A R E This is an excellent example of Edo, showing the changes from Edo to Meiji period, with Mon of the Samurai, castle, moat, shrines, temples, green spaces, rivers, family names of Yashiki. Edo bay contains a directional compass and two sailing "junks" under way, also a directional chart of distances. Printed Genji or Meiji first year. This map celebrates the change of era name, with the new Meiji Emperor, and thus documents the new status and revised map of Edo, the capital.
