He served with the British 4th Division in the field in 1914, before transferring to General Headquarters of the British Expeditionary Force where he worked as a staff officer for the remainder of the war. He was appointed deputy engineer-in-chief in 1918, and the following year assumed the directorship of the Military Branch of the Historical Section of the Committee of Imperial Defence. He retired from this position thirty years later, as the final of 28 volumes of official histories of military operations was published.
