Douglas Brinkley (born December 14, 1960) is an American author, Katherine Tsanoff Brown Chair in Humanities and professor of history at Rice University. Brinkley is the history commentator for CNN, and a contributing editor to the magazine Vanity Fair. He is a public spokesperson on conservation issues. He joined the faculty of Rice University as a professor of history in 2007. Luke A. Nichter is a Professor of History and Beck Family Senior Fellow at Texas A&M University - Central Texas, Book Review Editor for Presidential Studies Quarterly, and a National Endowment for the Humanities Public Scholar for 2017-2018. His area of specialty is the Cold War, the Presidency, and U.S. Political History, with a focus on the "long 1960s" from John F. Kennedy through Watergate. This concluding volume covers the final year of the Nixon white house tapes, captured on tape between 1971 and 1973. Revelations include how Nixon's greatest fear during the Watergate investigation was not that evidence would confirm his role in the break-in--he had none--but that his secret domestic intelligence proposal, the Huston Plan, would become public; how Nixon and Kissinger knew privately that the January 1973 Vietnam peace agreement would not hold, even as the ink was still drying; and Nixon's threat to send a "division" of tanks to kill Native Americans at the Wounded Knee standoff.

Trade paperback. Zustand: Very good. [12], 396, [6] pages. Footnotes. Map. Illustrations. The Commanders, 1863-1865. Bibliography. Index. Cover has slight wear and soiling. Lieutenant William H. Peel was 23 years old when Mississippi seceded from the Union. He joined the 11th Mississippi Infantry. Captured at the culmination of the Pickett-Pettigrew-Trimble Charge at Gettysburg on July 3, 1863, Peel spent the remainder of his service at the prison on Johnson's Island in Sandusky Bay. By turns elegiac, tragic and often comic Peel's record of those months, along with his detailed account of the famous battle that led to his incarceration, is one of the gems of personal literature created during that conflict. The diary, now in the care of the Mississippi Archives, was transcribed by a Peel descendent who brings to this work an understanding of both the history and the family that shaped him, giving the modern reader a view inside Peel's world. Foreword by Dr. David Bush. Presumed First Paperback Edition, First printing.

Hardcover. Zustand: Very good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Very good. First Printing [Stated]. The format is approximately 6.25 inches by 9.25 inches. xxix, [1], 225 pages. Illustrations. Tabular Data. Appendix I and II. Notes. Index. Editors' preface to the English edition. Yoshitake Horie, a Japanese field-grade Army officer who served as a liaison officer with the Japanese Navy, was in a unique position to describe in detail the respective positions, ideas, and assumptions that both services had about the Pacific War. A specialist in logistics and head of the headquarters on Chichi Jima, Horie was intimately involved with the battle plans. Robert D. Eldridge was Associate Professor at the Osaka School of International Public Policy, Japan. Charles W. Tatum was born in 1926 in Tulsa, OK and joined the U.S. Marine Corps in 1939. He served in the Marines until 1945 and fought in the Battle if Iwo Jima. He is the author of Red Blood, Black Sand. During a dinner with Major Yoshitaka Horie (in charge of 109th Divisions Detached Headquarters on Chichi Jima) Kuribayashi asked Horie his opinion for defending Iwo Jima, to which Horie replied it was vulnerable as "a pile of eggs" and better to sink it to the bottom of the ocean with enough explosives. Kuribayashiwho had spent much time in Canada as deputy military attaché and traveled often in Americawas in agreement, however they knew that at 628 miles (1,011 km) from Tokyo, Iwo Jima would be "a dagger aimed straight at the heart of the homeland". Before leaving Japan to take up his post, Kuribayashi had informed his wife not to expect him home. Fighting Spirit is essential reading for anyone interested in the Battle of Iwo Jima and the Pacific War. Maj. Horie was one of only four Japanese field grade officers directly associated with the Battle of Iwo Jima who survived. He was the only officer known to have left memoirs. Having served as a liaison officer with the Navy, Major Horie described in detail the respective positions, ideas, and assumptions that both the Imperial Japanese Army and Navy had when executing the Pacific War, the personalities involved, and the challenges they faced. He was a specialist in logistics and headed Lt. Gen. Kuribayashi's detached headquarters on Chichi Jima, located between Iwo Jima and mainland Japan. He was however intimately involved in planning the battle, and used his experience as a liaison to the Imperial Navy to share information and insights through his contacts. He was also very much aware of the limits to Japan's strategy. Fighting Spirit is an annotated translation of the memoirs of Imperial Japanese Army Major Yoshitaka Horie, co-edited by a USMC veteran of the Battle of Iwo Jima and an American academic who is a specialist on U.S.-Japan relations. Maj. Horie's book was first published in 1965, on the 20th anniversary of the battle. It was his desire to have it published in English, but he passed away in 2003 before seeing his dream realized. In addition to the 19 chapters of Horie's original work, the book includes an Editors' Preface, which provides biographical information on Maj. Horie and the context of the book, and two appendices of materials prepared by Maj. Horie shortly after the end of the war.

Hardcover. Zustand: Very good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Good. xxii, 296 pages. Footnotes. Bibliography. Index. Sticker residue on fep. The dust jacket has some wear and soiling. Michael Harrison (25 April 1907 13 September 1991) was the pen name of the English detective fiction and fantasy writer Maurice Desmond Rohan. Harrison published seventeen novels between 1934 and 1954, when he turned to writing detective fiction. He wrote pastiches of Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes and Poe's C. Auguste Dupin and was a noted Sherlock Holmes scholar. His most successful work, In the Footsteps of Sherlock Holmes, was published in 1958 and was followed by The London of Sherlock Holmes and The World of Sherlock Holmes. Harrison was awarded the Occident Prize for Weep for Lycidas (1934), was named Duke of Sant Estrella by the Kingdom of Redonda (1951), and was named Irregular Shilling by The Baker Street Irregulars of New York (1964). He was a member of the Society of Authors, Crime Writers' Association, Baker Street Irregulars of New York, and the Sherlock Holmes Society of London. In 1915, at the height of his career, Sherlock Holmes wrote his Memoirs and deposited the manuscript for safekeeping at the British Museum. Released by the Museum sixty years later, the manuscript has now been edited by the world's leading authority on Holmes. To Dr. Watson, Sherlock Holmes was the best and wisest man that Watson had ever known. But what was he really likethis man of modest birth who made himself the most famous private detective of all time, trusted agent, friend and confidant of the Great? Here is the great sleuth's own fearless analysis of his complex nature: his drug-taking; his ambitions; his reasons for not marrying; and his passion for the One Woman who would always be beyond his reach. The Memoirs are full of surprises even for confirmed Holmesians, revealing aspects of Holmes's life that neither Dr. Watson nor Sir Arthur Conan Doyle were aware of. For instance, they show that the most powerful influence in shaping Homes's career, by finding him illustrious clients, was the American financier William H. Vanderbilt. But if the Memoirs take us into a world of wealth and power, there is another world with which Holmes became equally well acquainted: that raffish demimonde his half-dozen carefully contrived 'other selves' could penetrate without endangering the lifeof reputationof Sherlock Holmes. The adventures of these masquerade characters, ranging from 'a groom out of livery' to a female temperance campaigner, throw new and amusing light on Holmes's 'undercover' activities. Holmes touches only occasionally in these Memoirs on his actual methods of detection; he is concerned primarily with describing the world in which he flourished, and his place in it. Almost every great name in modern history up to World War Iin the United States as well as in the Old Worldappears in the dramatis personae of Sherlock Holmes's astonishing life. Hardcover. Zustand: Fine. First edition. Octavo. xix, (1), 633, (1)pp. Index, bibliography and glossary. Text in English, Latin and Hebrew. Green buckram lettered in white with red band near top of spine. A fine, as new copy. As a result of Abraham Ibn Ezra's increasing popularity after his death, there were repeated waves of translation of collections of his Hebrew astrological treatises into Latin and into the emerging European vernaculars. The present volume offers the first critical edition, accompanied by an English translation, a commentary, and an introductory study, of three Latin texts on the astrological doctrines of elections and interrogations, written by or attributed to Abraham Ibn Ezra: the Liber electionum, the Liber interrogationum, and the Tractatus particulares. Hardcover. 568 p. Footnotes. Maps and Plans. Illustrations. Bibliography. Index. The purposed of this new translation of Pierre Pouchot's Memoires sur la derniere guerre is to make an important work on the Seven Years War in American more readily available to both scholars and enthusiasts, especially those who do not read French. The rarity of both the original edition of 1781 and the 1866 Franklin Hough translation has limited the use of the information provided by Pouchot's rich narrative. Very good. No dust jacket as issued.

Hardcover. Zustand: Very good. Limited Edition of 2000 copies. Various paginations (approximately 74 pages). Oversized volume measuring 9-1/4 inches by 13 inches. Includes Historical Introduction, The Diary, Letter that Accompanied Diary, Appendix, and Bibliography. This book is Volume One of the Western History Publications, and Volume One in the series "Annals of the West," under the editorial direction of the Western History Center, University of Utah, Salt Lake City. Topics covered include The Dunlaps, The Montana Mining Region, and What is Necessary for an Outfit. Includes black and white photographs, and full color maps (which derive from U.S. Department of the Interior Topographic Maps). The Appendix includes a list of ranches and accommodations on the route. Catherine "Kate" Cruikshank was born on 14 February 1837 in Lee County, Iowa. Her father, Alexander, was a native of Norway, while her mother, Keziah (Perkins) Cruikshank, came from Kentucky. The family included seven children. From a biography of James Cruikshank, Kate's older brother, we know that the Cruikshank children had access to several years of schooling and were raised as Methodists. In 1864, one month before her twenty-seventh birthday, Kate married Samuel Dunlap, an Ohio native. He was thirty-eight and had worked as a teacher at the Indiana Deaf and Dumb Asylum. Three months after their marriage the couple left Iowa for Bannack City, Montana Territory. Although mining conditions were quite favorable in Montana in the 1860s, the Dunlaps operated a drug store. Samuel also worked as a stock raiser, and Kate taught at a subscription school in Nevada City. Kate bore seven children before Samuel died in 1878, only fourteen years after their marriage. Kate remained with her children in Bannack, Montana for five more years before moving to Junction, Idaho in 1883. She operated a drug store and also worked as a midwife and practical nurse. She died in 1901 and was buried at Salmon, Idaho.

Front cover is decorated with colorful imagery of two black women and one black man picking cotton in a field. This is one of the Educational Series Teaching Pieces, Series VII, for Piano. The Boston Music Company had a close connection to G. Schirmer of New York. The Boston Music Company was founded in 1885 by Gustave Schirmer, Jr. (Feb. 18, 1864 - July 15, 1907) who was the younger of the two sons of Gustav Schirmer (Sept. 19, 1829 - Aug. 5, 1893) founder of the music publishing firm G. Schirmer. Before his father's death Gustave became a partner in his father's firm with his brother Rudolph Edward Schirmer (July 22, 1859 - Aug. 19, 1919) while retaining independent ownership of his Boston company. In 1891, his cousin Ernest Charles Schirmer (March 15, 1865 - Feb. 15, 1958) became business manager of the Boston Music Company. He was admitted to partnership in the firm in 1902 and withdrew from it in 1917. Sometime after Gustave's sudden death from appendicitis in 1907 the firm was operated by Winfred Rogers but eventually control of the firm passed back into the Schirmer family when Gustave Schirmer III acquired ownership of the company and ran the firm until his death in May, 1965 at the age of 74. Some time after his death ownership of the company passed to the Hammerstein Music & Theater Company, Inc. The company gained early prominence as the principal publisher of the works of Ethelbert Nevin (1862â"1901). Especially a copy of Narcisuss from Water Scenes, first published in 1891, was in every middle-class home around the turn of the 20th century. In 1997 the company added a music lesson center to its Boston facility in order to offer private music lessons. The last identified music publication of the company was Lois Rehder Holmes' The Abandoned Lighthouse published in 2001 and imprinted with the plate number B.M.Co. 14344. In August, 2003 the Boston Music Company shut down and directed potential sheet music customers to the firm Boston Scores. Presumed First Edition, First printing thus.

Wraps. Zustand: Good. The format is approximately 6 inches by 9 inches. [2], 307-320 pages, plus covers. Front cover has an illustration. Footnotes. Illustrations. Cover and pages have some wear and soiling. This is No. 20 from the Saint Augustine Historical Society. Front cover has a title variant from the formal title page. Front cover reads Memoirs of a Westpointer in St. Augustine 1824-1826. Alfred Beckley (May 26, 1802 May 26, 1888) was a public official who founded Beckley, West Virginia, and a brigadier general in the Virginia militia during the American Civil War. He named the city of Beckley in honor of his father, John James Beckley,[a][b] who was the first librarian of the United States Congress. Beckley was appointed to the United States Military Academy at West Point, nominated for West Point by William Henry Harrison and President James Monroe; he entered on September 25, 1819, and graduated on July 1, 1823, ninth in a graduating class of 35. This class started with 86 cadets in 1819. He was in the army for 13 years, serving the entire time as an artillery officer in Pennsylvania, Florida, Virginia, and New York. In 18341835, after legal disputes, Beckley received the title to 56,679 acres his father had owned in western Virginia. In order to manage his inherited estates, Beckley resigned his officer's commission on October 24, 1836. He then settled in Fayette County (now Raleigh County), West Virginia, which was then part of Virginia, finding it a "perfect wilderness". His home, named Wildwood, was built in 18351836, expanded in 1874, and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1970. Beckley returned to military service as a brigadier general in the Virginia Militia from 1849 to 1861; serving out of loyalty to his state even though he strongly opposed its secession from the Union. By summer 1861, Beckley was in charge of the 12th Brigade of Virginia militia against Union troops at Cotton Hill, West Virginia, in the Kanawha Valley. This region was largely pro-Union and his militia was not highly motivated, so Wise condemned Beckley's unit in August 1861. Thus, it only served until October 1861, contributing little to the Confederate cause. He officially resigned his commission on February 8, 1862. Returning to Union-occupied Beckley, he surrendered to the Union officer in charge, Rutherford B. Hayes, on March 1617, 1862. He was then arrested by the Union army on April 3, 1862, and sent first to the Atheneum prison camp near Wheeling, West Virginia, and then to Camp Chase, near Columbus, Ohio, as a prisoner of war. He claimed that he was really pro-Union, but had simply been loyal to Virginia, and had severed all ties with the Confederacy. He was released on June 18, 1862, and arrived back in Raleigh County on June 26, 1862. Cecil DeGrotte Eby Jr. was a retired professor of English, He was born in Charles Town, West Virginia. Eby earned a Bachelor of Arts from Shepherd College in 1950, a Master of Arts from Northwestern University in 1951, and a Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania in 1958. He also earned an honorary A.B. from Western Maryland College in 1988. Eby served in the 16th fleet of the U.S. Navy from 1945-46. He then entered graduate school to prepare himself for an academic career. Eby was an assistant professor of English at James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Virginia (1957-60). He then joined the faculty of Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Virginia, where he remained until 1965. Eby spent the remainder of his academic career at the University of Michigan (1965-95), where he retired as professor of English. During his career, Eby wrote 9 critically acclaimed books. Subjects range from the U.S. Civil War ("The Old South Illustrated," 1959, University of North Carolina Press; "Porte Crayon: The Life of David H. Strother," 1973, University of North Carolina Press; and "A Virginia Yankee in the Civil War," 1961, University of North Carolina Press), to the Spanish Civil War ("The Siege of the Alcazar," 1965, Random House; "Between the Bullet and the Lie," 1969, Holt, Rinehart & Winston; and "Comrades and Commissars: The Lincoln Battalion in Spain," 2006, Penn State Press); to the 1832 conflict between the United States and Native Americans ("That Disgraceful Affair: The Black Hawk War," 1973, Duke University Press), to World War II ("Hungary at War: Civilians and Soldiers in World War II," 2003, Penn State Press), and how popular literature paved the way for World War I ("The Road to Armageddon: The Martial Spirit in English Popular literature 1870-1914," 1988, Duke University Press). Eby also published numerous academic articles in outlets such as American Literature, American Quarterly, Michigan Quarterly Review, and the New England Quarterly. In addition to his scholarly accomplishments, Eby was very active in the Historical Society of Jefferson County, West Virginia. He frequently contributed historical non-fiction essays and articles related to the local history of Jefferson County, where Eby spent his formative years. Reprint from he Florida Historical Quarterly, Vol. XLII, No. 3, April 1964.

This compilation stops before the Battle of Gettysburg. The New York State Newspaper Project, which ran from March 1987 through January 2007, was administered by the New York State Library and carried out through nine regional projects. The Project's bibliographic activity consisted of: a detailed inventory of newspaper collections throughout the state, cataloging into the Online Union Catalog, and the entry of holdings into the United States Newspaper Program union list. Between March 1987 and October 2004, the Project: inventoried 1,759 newspaper repositories, cataloged 22,785 distinct newspaper titles, with 10,537 of those published in New York State, and created 66,065 local holdings records with issue specific data. Preservation microfilming was done in accordance with American National Standards Institute and Association for Information and Image Management standards. The Project microfilmed over 4.37 million pages of New York State newspapers between July 1991 and August 2006. The Newspaper Project's statewide inventory improved bibliographic access to once unknown newspaper collections. From the INTRODUCTION: The idea for this volume originated in 1990, when New York State Newspaper Project field cataloger Beverly Denninger discovered while performing her duty of ferreting out any and all newspapers in Central New York, several bound volumes of Civil War-era New York Heralds about to be discarded. She called the Project staff at the New York State Library in Albany and it was decided to save the papers for some useful purpose. Upon their arrival in Albany, it was discovered that the Heralds' pages contained many engraved maps for the years 1861-1865. Shortly after this revelation, the Project--which had begun in 1987 to actively inventory, catalog and microfilm New York State's newspapers with funding from the National Endowment for the Humanities--formed a non-profit group called the Friends of the New York State Newspaper Project. The Friends, who help publicize the Project and raise microfilming funds to be matched by NEH, were approached with the idea of publishing a book of maps to be reprinted from the rescued Heralds, a proposal they supported. It was soon decided to add soldiers', sailors' and civilians' letters published in other newspapers from across the Empire State during the War of the Rebellion in order to add depth and immediacy to the information contained in the maps. The slow process of compiling and editing the maps and letters began, with the help of Project staff, several members of the State Library's staff, and a few Friends, who all volunteered hundreds of hours of their own time to' help make the idea a reality.
