Original wraps. Zustand: Near fine. Signed first edition of A Side Light on the Making of a Nation by Dr. Howard Jones, inscribed to the "Dean of American archaeology," Warren K. Moorehead. (illustrator). First Edition. Quarto, 64pp. Original brown paper wraps, title in black on front cover. Solid text block, a few short closed tears and creases to edges of cover. Internally fine. Inscribed on the front cover: "To Warren K. Moorehead / with compliments / Howard Jones." Warren King Moorehead (1866-1939) was an American archaeologist and writer, primarily known for his work in the field of Native American archaeology. Born in Siena, Italy, he grew up in Xenia, Ohio. Moorehead was the first curator of the Department of Archaeology at Phillips Academy in Andover, Massachusetts, where he worked from 1901 until his death in 1939. He played a significant role in early archaeological explorations and excavations in the United States, particularly in the Ohio Valley. Moorehead was involved in the excavation of the Hopewell Mound Group in Ross County, Ohio, and his work contributed to the understanding of the Hopewell culture. He published numerous articles and books on archaeology, including "The Stone Age in North America" (1910) and "The American Indian in the United States" (1914). His methods, typical for his time, have been criticized in later years for their lack of scientific rigor and documentation. Signed.

Inscribed by General Sir Ian Hamilton on the front free endpaper: "For Councillor Charles Wilson - From Ian Hamilton. Wednesday, December 16th '42. / 1, Hyde Park Gardens: W.2." Sir Ian Hamilton (1853-1947) was a British Army general who served as Commander in Chief of the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force in the Gallipoli Campaign of World War I. A career military officer, Hamilton was wounded in action at the Battle of Majuba during the First Boer War, leaving his left hand permanently injured. He also served in the Second Boer War, the Russo-Japanese War and finally the First World War. His command of the Allied Mediterranean Expeditionary Force at Gallipoli in 1915, at the age of 62, was his final military command. His orders were to gain control of the Dardanelles from the Ottoman Empire and to capture Constantinople, but his invasion stalled and resulted in heavy casualties. Hamilton was recalled to London and lived until 1947.
