Wharton was a prolific and critically acclaimed literary voice, and wrote novels informed by her upper-class New York peers. This play and novel was made into a 1939 film adaptation starring Bette Davis. This work contains the story in its adapted form, by American playwright, poet and author Zoe Akins. The play won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1935. From the collection of South African writer, film and theatre critic Clive Hirschhorn.
