Soft cover. Zustand: Very Good. 1st Edition. The debut collection of poetry from Edith Shiffert (1916-2017), put into print by Alan Swallow in 1961. The naturalistic, quietly profound lyric verse found in this volume would presage the author's eventual lifelong dedication to the literature of Japan. Shiffert moved to Kyoto two years after the publication of In Open Woods, where she resided for half a century and published important early studies in English of Matsuo Basho, as well as an anthology of modern Japanese Poetry in collaboration with Yuki Sawa. She would write poetry of her own for the rest of her life. 5" x 7" softcover book in card wraps, 40pp. Unmarked save for a penned price adjustment to the front cover. From the collection of a tobacco smoker, with attendant tanning to covers and a faint aroma of smoke to interior. Page interiors bright and crisp nonetheless; binding sound and unmarked otherwise. A beautiful and rare collection.
