A first printing of the true first edition of Vol. I, No. 4 of this controversial pre-war journal, published as a paperback original in June 1926. Only 500 copies printed - with 450 going to subscribers (this copy unnumbered). Contributors include James Joyce (unauthorised); Carl Rakosi (Nov 6, 1903 - Jun 25, 2004) the last surviving member of the Objectivist poets, still publishing and performing poetry well into his 90s; Oscar Wilde / Convict C-33 (unauthorised); Frank Harris (14 Feb 1856 - 27 Aug 1931) an Irish-American editor, novelist, short story writer, journalist and publisher, friendly with many well-known figures of his day; Arthur Symons (28 Feb 1865 - 22 Jan 1945) a British poet, critic, translator and magazine editor; Pierre-Félix Louÿs 10 Dec 1870 - 4 Jun 1925) was a Belgian poet and writer, most renowned for lesbian and classical themes in some of his writings. He is known as a writer who sought to "express pagan sensuality with stylistic perfection". ***Very good in the original orange thin card covers, printed in black and red on the front cover and spine. Sewn binding. The covers have some marks, rubbing and creasing commensurate with age and handling over the last 100 years, but are actually remarkably clean. There is a scuff tear at the top of the front cover and some creasing to the bottom corner of the back cover, but the fragile spine covering is complete without damage. Some light rubbing to the edges, but no serious creases or tears. The spine has very light reading creases to the paper covering, but remains flat and square without any rolling (please see scans). Internally also very good with no previous ownership inscriptions or annotations. No significant creases or tears. Softcover. Zustand: Very Good. Vol. 1, No. 3. Slim octavo. 12pp. Stapled wrappers soiled and last few pages with a bit of light foxing, staples somewhat oxidized, sound and near very good. Prints poems by Charles Francis Phillips, Charles Wharton Stork, Laura Benet, William Laird, Lee Wilson Dodd, Robert Haven Schauffler ("The Harmonie of Heaven" - the poem advertised on the cover), John Hall Wheelock, Jessie B. Rittenhouse, Thomas Walsh, Amy Lowell, and Virginia Woodward Cloud. However, this little literary mag is most interesting for being the first publication of Samuel Roth, who would later move to the underground publication of curiosa and be the appellant in a 1957 Supreme Court case, Roth vs the United States, the decision of which "opened the way to Constitutional protection for expression previously censored for indecency, and became a template for the liberalizing First Amendment decisions of the 1960s" (Kislak Center). A respected poet in his time, the lower wrap advertises Roth's book *First Offering*. An interesting and uncommon piece of publishing and First Amendment history.

Spines moderately faded with uneven fading on covers adjacent spines, light wear to extremities, a few soil marks, all very good or better, with the text fresh and clean. Each is housed in publisher's black papercovered slipcase; the fragile boxes have slight wear and a few chips, about very good, except for Number 2, which is split at top and bottom edges on one side. Each limited to 500 copies, all unnumbered except for Number 3 (145). Contains four (of five) pirated installments of James Joyce's "New Unnamed Work", [*Finnegans Wake*] (*S&C* C65). Contains the first four (of five) installments of an unauthorized serial appearance of Finnegans Wake, reprinted from European publications. One of 500 copies printed. Small ownership signature of a noted American psychologist in ink on the first page of each issue. The back cover of issue no. 1 also has a small presentation in ink to the psychologist. Toning and light dust soiling to the printed wrappers, some creasing and short tears to the spines, very good, housed in two cloth slipcases covered with brown paper tape. The first four consecutive issues of Samuel Roth's *Two Worlds*, containing a scarce pirated American printing of *Finnegans Wake*, a 20th Century literary highspot. *Slocum and Cahoon* C65; *Burgess 99* and *Connolly 100* (one of only three titles on both lists).
