Small slim 4to, pp115 + colophon page with 16 colour and b/w wood engravings by Frank Martin. Hardcover no dust jacket. Binding, in removable plastic protector, of brown cloth spine with gilt titles over b/w decorative paper covered boards in very good+ condition with just a little rubbing to tips of boards and top & tail of spine. Inside in excellent fine and unread condition. This translation of 'Lazarillo de Tormes', a fictitious biography attributed to Diego Hurtado de Mendoza, is the first English version after a series of early translations, the first were French (1560 and 1561), followed relatively closely by the English in 1576 with the French 'Lyon' edition being used by Rowland as the primary source in 1586. An excellent copy of this scarce edition.
