Erstausgabe
Hardcover. Zustand: Fair. London: Longman, Green, Longman, and Roberts, 1859. First and second series. Worn set of three volumes. First series volume is a stated second edition, 1859; Second series (2 volumes) is the first edition (1862). Original publisher's rust brown cloth with gilt spine lettering and alpine climbers in gilt on the fronts. First series volume has nine color lithographed fold-out maps and 8 chromolithographs mounted on thick tan paper, additional woodcuts; upper part of first map is separated from the lower but map image itself not affected (readily repairable). This volume has chips to the spine ends, cover soil and edgewear, fabric split along the joints, good hinges (front hinge just starting), sound text block, some tissue chips, pages lightly age-toned but clean with some minimal scattered foxing, decorative name stamp on half-title, no other names or markings. The second series is in two volumes; volume one contains eight foldout maps and 22 woodcuts, xiv, 445 pages; volume two contains six foldout maps and 34 woodcuts, viii, 541 pages. Covers of these two volumes are good with modest wear to edges and corners but the spine coverings are chipped, cracked and in poor condition, hinges good (front hinge very lightly cracked), text blocks sound, pages lightly age-toned but clean, decorative name stamp on each half-title, no other markings. Landmark series in mountaineering literature, leading to the establishment of The Alpine Journal in 1863. These books are from a collection of alpine and mountaineering books owned by Jeffery and Beverly Parrette who traveled the world climbing challenging peaks and often presented the books to one another as gifts. Hard Cover. Fair. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
