Paperback. Zustand: Fine. Paperback. "William Morris was the most prominent Victorian artist to embrace the new socialist movement of the 1880s, and his socialist diary one of the only two extended diaries he kept. The diary provides us with a highly accessible introduction to his political activities, and documents the energy and enthusiasm of his work for 'the social revolution', a commitment which strongly influenced the origins of British socialism. Florence Boos's carefully edited text is supplemented by many running notes and separate biographical sketches of fellow-workers in the early socialist movement whom Morris mentioned in the diary" (back cover). Fine in red paper wrappers with black title to spine and front cover. Slight wear to corners of wrappers and slight yellowing to interior pages. Clean and bright. 75 pages. MOR/080515.

Internally the book is very clean. "For some twenty years, in what is clearly one of the most significant bodies of work to emerge from the studio glass movement, he [William Morris] has been thinking, considering, pondering, and perhaps even brooding on the question of the relationship between humankind and nature, and on the way that art and artists have always tried to touch upon that special and often spiritual bond." - James Yood.

Hardback in dustwrapper. 23 × 15.5cm, lxvii + 406pp. William Morris's letters, here collected for the first time form a valuable record of the growth and development of mind and personality of the 'poetic upholsterer' as he was called by his contemporaries. Among the many letters included, they show him writing to his mother announcing his decision to become an architect instead of taking Holy Order, to the Athenaeum and The Times on behalf of 'Anti-Scrape' - his Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings, and to Mrs Burne-Jones on his view of the capitalist economy. Condition: The book is in very good condition, the dustwrapper is tanned to the spine with a small closed tear to the front joint and some minor loss to the top edge but it is now within a protective sleeve.

In the maroon paper-covered card slipcase lettered in gilt to the front panel. Pale grey endpapers, top edge gilt (fore- and lower edges untrimmed), bound-in black ribbon bookmark. The binding design is by David Pearson and has been executed by the Sigloch Buchbinderei in Blaufelden, Germany. Printed by Cambridge University Press on Oxenford twin-wire laid paper made at the James Cropper Mill at Burneside in Cumbria. A fine copy, presenting as new, with just a few light surface marks to the slipcase. A beautifully produced facsimile of this landmark in the history of printing. This 2008 reprint of the 2002 limited edition Folio Society facsimile (described as an 'unlimited' edition, although now out of print) reproduces in extraordinary detail and quality the most ambitious and magnificent book to be produced by William Morris' legendary Kelmscott Press, described by W. B. Yeats as "the most beautiful of all printed books". Edward Burne-Jones called it "a pocket cathedral it is so full of design" and "the finest book ever printed; if W. M. had done nothing else it would be enough". Burne-Jones devoted all his Sundays for almost three years to the work, and Morris came to talk with him as he drew. As the artist worked he increased the number of proposed illustrations from 48 to 60 to 72 to 87 and Morris accepted each change. The process of adapting the drawings to the woodblock and engraving them, was entrusted to W. H. Hooper and R. Catterson-Smith, with Burne-Jones closely supervising every detail.
